ICENESfflFTER QUALIFIES hows Fitness for Belmont Stakes in Winning Panticq Purse Closes Big Gap to Beat Slam and Grand GrandPlay Play Works Out a Mile in 187 and andMile Mile and a Furlong In 152 NEW YORK N T May 24 Sceneshifter j6 threeyearold son of Sickle and Stage Iraft Maxwell Howard purchased from Jo eph E Widener last winter in Florida was an easy winner of the best offering at Bel inont Park today when he scored in the fantico Purse for those of his age It was his first start since the Kentucky Derby in which he finished fifth and after racing the qfeven furlongs in 124 he was worked out the mile in 137 to pull up a mile and a furlong in 152 This colt is an eligible for the mile and a half of the Belmont Stakes and he will probably be sent to the post in that prize The race run by the son of Sickle was doubly impressive for the reason that Stout permitted him to drop far back of the pace in the early racing and it was 5nly through the stretch that he dashed along but he closed with a rush that carried Him over the line winner by three lengths over Siam from the Bomar Stable with Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Grand Play a close third and just beating Royal Reigh ReighFor For the beginning of a new week of the meeting another big crowd was on hand and the conditions were pleasant for the sport It was a card made up entirely of overnight races but excellent sport resulted resultedHELD HELD IN RESERVE RESERVEIn In this seven furlongs dash which held the feature position Grand Play was first from the stalls with Orient Express and Royal Feast close after him Sceneshifter had broken well enough but Stout almost at once eased him back and he was so far back of the contention going to the first turn he did not seem to have a reasonable winning chance chanceThe The pace was a fast one and before the stretch was reached Royal Feast had raced by both Grand Play and Orient Express to show in a clear lead but Grand Play was hanging on well though Orient Express was goon through and dropping back By this time Sceneshifter was making up some ground on the outside but he was still sev ral lengths back of the contention The half had been reached in 46 and then in the stretch the son of Sickle began to run He was quickly in third place back of Royal Feast and Grand Play and then on by them to come home an easy winner Siam was another which came with a rush in the stretch and it was only in the last nod he tpok the place from Grand Play while the tiring Royal Feast was a close fourth fourthJ J S Rileys Fredrick was off running in the opening six furlongs dash over the main course and Longden making every use of that advantage sent him right along to have him the winner over Nautch from he Howe stable with Night Raven that Carried the silks of the Starmount Stable taking third from Royal Hobo and Gold Cross was fourth THE CHIEF REGISTERS The Chief a handsome chestnut son of IrcIlIlclIlL mill JXaIlalL lllaUc UUU 111 Lllu JUUI JUUIand and a half furlongs of the second race and it was a performance to suggest that he i belongs among the best though he is not engaged in either the Juvenile or the Na ¬ tional Stallion Stakes He scored over Hal Price Headleys Bourbon King a son of Whichone and Ancient Queen that was making his first appearance under the silks These two stood out so far over the others that it was really a two horse race Joseph E Wideners Bucking a candidate for the National Stallion Stakes being five lengths away to finish third He was three lengths before Fairy Dale DaleThe The second four and a half furlongs dash for maiden juveniles brought victory to the John Hay Whitney silks when Pumpkin starting for the first time scored over Rob ¬ ert L Gerrys Perpetuate another firsttime starter and third went to Flying Ariel from the Howe Stable Pumpkin was the favorite of the field fieldSonny Sonny Workman brought home his sec ¬ ond winner of the day when in a fighting finish he earned a camera decision for Charles S Bromleys Round Table over Jef ¬ ferson Davis Cohns Iron Ore while a length and a half back of them Dewey Bent hams Fight Talk which had furnished all the pace saved third easily from Shining Knight KnightEARLY EARLY SETTLER NEARLY LEFT LEFTEarly Early Settler had no chance at the break breakJhen Jhen he was almost left at the post while ight Talk went away running and under anug restraint he cut out the pace with Shining Knight in second place and Iron Ore third Workman permitted Round Table to settle into his stride and in consequence he was well back in the early racing racingIt It was after rounding from the back stretch that Round Table moved into third place to Fight Talk and Shining Knight and Iron Ore was following the Bromley plater platerFight Fight Talk was still going well as he headed into the stretch and with Shining Knight second Workman had to circle the pair of them with Round Table He roused the old fellow with the whip to go to Fight Talk but Iron Ore had also closed with a rush and he was right with Round Table as they crossed the line lineThe The first mile and a half race of the meet Ing and fashioned for those of the cheapest variety went to Mrs Ethel D Jacobs Glit ¬ tering with F T Blaisdells Wilcp taking second place and Syriac saved third from White Lightning the only other starter
