ARAHO TRIUMPH AT SUFFOLK Mucho Gusto Continues Winning Ways in Pilgrim Handicap Outfinlshes Crack Band of Sprinters to toCarry Carry OHara Colors to Victory Auspicious Inaugural BOSTON Mass May 24 Mucho Gusto proved conclusively that he is one of the best horses in the New England racing sec ¬ tor as he carried the dotted silks of Mrs Walter OHaras Araho stable to a stirring triumph in the Pilgrim Handicap which fea ¬ tured the opening day of sport at the greatly improved Suffolk Downs course this after ¬ noon The winner was forced to fight his way home against the speediest sprinters quartered here He appeared to be hope ¬ lessly defeated as he dropped back on the turn for home However Eddie Smith man ¬ aged to save ground on the rail as they straightened out and he came into conten ¬ tion again Once more at the sixteenth pole he dropped back as the pace quickened and once more he came on under the energetic Smith riding This final spurt carried him home neck free of the hard running Lady Higloss from the stable of Miss Anita Doris It was a game race and a fast one for he finished in 111 time that was good over the course that has a new cushion of loam and while safe is not the speediest in this section sectionI I HARD FOUGHT CONTEST CONTESTBacon Bacon and Weston fought it out hammer and tongs for the early lead with Mucho Gusto third to the far turn where he ap ¬ peared to labor and dropped back Lady Higloss came around horses to supplant him and at the head of the stretch she appeared a cinch for she does her best running in the final yards and Bacon and Weston had run each other into the ground However Mucho Gusto came on again to challenge It appeared that the Lady had his num ¬ ber as she surged ahead at the sixteenth pole but old Mucho Gusto is a hard cus ¬ tomer to down Just past the sixteenth pole he unleashed one final burst as the gad rained down on him and that spurt meant the winners prize of 1985 in the 2500 stake stakeIt It was the second stake victory in a little over a week for the winner His other score at Narragansett Park was over a distance of ground groundIt It was a grand opening at refurbished Suffolk Downs this afternoon Twenty thou ¬ sand fans were out to cheer the horses home despite the fact that four straight fa ¬ vorites were sent to the cooler before old Mucho Gusto came along to revive their flagging spirits And they had a real live band instead of canned music musicCHARMED CHARMED EYES REGISTERS REGISTERSC C W Phelans Charmed Eyes drove home by a length in the threequarters event that opened the season at Suffolk Downs Knott had the Sickle mare clear of Miss Anita Doris Starogan which set the pace until they were approaching the eighth post Mike Syuf ys Browneyed Pat was third three lengths back of the runnerup and a length clear of James River as they finished finishedD D MacVean sent forth a surprise winner in the threequarters event second on the program in Tpuche held at better than 20 to 1 The winner ridden by Cimpanelli charged up fast in the stretch to get the decision over A E Webers Company by a half length The latter was a length in ad ¬ vance of Jimmy Logans Khay High Martin finished fourth t tBill Bill Gallaghers Miss Apprehend completed a double for Kem Knott as she came again in the stretch to win the five furlongs dash that was third She passed the judges three lengths ahead of Manhasset Stables Last Lay with Lady Infinite from Jack Whytes barn two and a half lengths behind the runnerup Notoriety was fourth under the wire The winner was the third straight long shot to score paying 1740 1740MINSTRELETTE MINSTRELETTE AGAIN AGAINJack Jack Whytes Minstrelette recently claimed from Miss Anita Doris stable made it three in a row and continued the march of the outsiders as she came home in the fourth at a mile and a sixteenth drawing off in the final yards under hard urging from Schieh to gain the decision by a half length over A R Manns Tragedian Two and a half lengths back of the battling pair C E Mil lens More Pep was third in front of Sir Thomas The latter was out in all the pace fight but tired at the end endOcean Ocean Roll the threeyearold Strolling Player colt that was backed into even money favoritism over at Narragansett Park last out and finished in seventh position came back this afternoon to race a mile in 138 and be well in hand at the end He was a half length in front of Pharloch which fin ¬ ished three lengths to the good of High Velocity Pharloch was the favorite for the race and as usual was far back for the first half mile and staged a stretch rush to gain his final placing Despite his rush however it is doubtful if he would have caught the winner at any distance
