Here and There on the Turf Case Ace Ducked Withers to Win Derby DerbyFlying Flying Scot Gained Fanciest Victory VictoryBelmont Belmont Next for Whitney Colt ColtExtra Extra Distance Aids Araho Lass Robert McGarvey in announcing Case Aces retirement from the Kentucky Derby field stated the fleet Teddy colt would be reserved for the Withers Stakes but in a later change of plans the Milky Way Farm speedster was held in the Middle West to compete for and win the Illinois Derby which had a value of something like 5500 less than the 15050 earned by Flying Scot in the Belmont Park attraction Apparently it was just as well that trainer McGarvey made such a switch in his battle program because Case Ace had much the tougher task in accounting for the Illinois Derby than did Flying Scot in the Withers Case Ace scored by a neck over Grey Count while John Hay Whitneys representative was drawing away at the end in the Withers to defeat Charing Cross by a length and a half However the son of Teddy and Sweetheart had up 126 pounds causing him to give at least six pounds all around while Flying Scot shoul ¬ dered equal weight of 118 pounds with his opponents and came from behind the pace Case Ace furnished all the speed speedFlying Flying Scot wound up a slight favorite in inHhe Hhe Withers by virtue of his effort in the thePreakness Preakness Stakes in which he finished third Gilbert got the son of The Porter and Caledonia away smartly and in close pursuit of the pace until making the turn where he moved forward to race with the pacemaking Charing Cross until the final furlong Then he drew away in handy fashion Because of his Withers effort Flying Scot can be expected to oppose War Admiral and Pompoon in the Belmont Stakes although these colts whipped him fairly and squarely by eight lengths in the Preakness Stakes StakesMosawtre Mosawtre which landed in third place in the Withers also may be regarded as a Bel ¬ mont prospect as he was gaining at the end and the additional half mile of the ensuing event should prove more to his liking as he finished closer to Flying Scot at Pimlico than he did Saturday SaturdayThe The performance of Case Ace was not without considerable merit as he took up top weight set all the pace after having been fractious at the post and covered the mile and a furlong distance in 151 two seconds off Mata Haris track record His ability to stay has been questioned but under Alfred Robertsons fine handling he was never more than a length in front with Grey Count being lapped on him all during the final half mile mileAfter After getting to Case Aces throatlatch at the furlong post after having lost some ground on the turn the Louisiana Derby winner just could not advance any more while the others were held safe Heelfly which had made a futile bid to run down War Admiral at the end of six furlongs in the Kentucky Derby finished evenly to gain third honors as Sunset Trail U Dellor and Military others which had started In the Churchill Downs classic were back in the pack Because of his Illinois Derby triumph iCafc iCafcJhCn JhCn be expected to make ready for the American Derby along with his stable mates Reaping Reward and Military MilitaryHorses Horses from the Araho Stable of Mrs Walter OHara achieved a unique record during the highly successful Narragansett Park meeting which has just closed They accounted for each of the stake attractions on the four Saturdays of the session Mucho Gusto having triumphed twice and New Deal and Araho Lass once each Araho Lass smartly bred daughter of Teddy and Super ¬ stitious finished with a rush to take the Old Colony Stakes by a length over the highly regarded Huskie Boy Whereas she was scoring her maiden victory Huskie Boy was suffering his initial loss but the son of Bull Dog was as impressive in defeat as Araho Lass was in winning Huskie Boy went to the front at the start and was closely pressed all the way only tiring in the final sixteenth as Eddie Smith brought up Araho Lass with her tremendous rush rushThe The additional distance over her previous starts undoubtedly proved beneficial to Araho Lass as did the manner in which Huskie Boy killed off the early speedsters which included Don Lopez and Great Union UnionThe The daughter of Teddy had been finishing well in half mile races without being able to get to the winner but the Old Colony was over the five furlongs distance and she made up about five lengths in the last quarter after having suffered a consid ¬ erable loss of ground in circling the field Her record could have been interpreted to indicate improvement over previous starts the public preferred to center its support on Huskie Boy and Great Union Observers tell me W C Stroubes youngster probably was short as a change in track conditions prevented trainer Michael M Harrison from preparing the colt according to schedule Great Union was in close quarters around the turn as Don Lopez rode iim closely but he finished evenly
