JOHNSTOWN NOSE WINNER OF BREEDERS FUTURITY Achieves Victory Over Allegro in Close and Exciting Finish Lightspur Only Head Behind Allegro After Sensational Stretch Duel Involving Three HorsesBelair HorsesBelairYoungster Youngster Earns 9335 Prize LEXINGTON Ky Oct 22 Johnstown came out of the East to cap ¬ ture Keenelands revival of the timehonored Breeders Futurity but Wil ¬ liam Woodwards sprightly colorbearer was given the race of his life by his midwestern opposition and barely came away with a nose triumph over Allegro sporting Charles T Fishers Dixianas silks as John Marschs Lightspur was just another head back The bay son of Jamestown and La France made the Futurity his third consecutive stakes victory before one of the largest crowds ever to gather at Keeneland His triumph par ¬ ticularly thrilled the spectators as he had been installed an oddson favorite Johnstown which previously had won the Richard Johnson Stakes and Remsen Handicap and had been fourth in the Belmont Futurity added 9335 to his earnings as he sped the six furlongs in 111 under an im ¬ post of 119 pounds The track although fast was slightly dead from recent rains but the weather was ideal for autumn FOLLOWS PACE PACEUnder Under splendid handling from Jimmy Stout Johnstown was rated in close atten ¬ dance of the early pace set by Olney and forced by Lightspur being kept on the out ¬ side clear of possible interference Allegro after breaking in front had been taken sev ¬ eral lengths off the pace paceAfter After Olney had run the opening quarter In 22 and the halfmile in 46 with Lightspur right after him Stout called upon Johnstown and the New York colt was ready with his response As the field straightened out for the run home Johns ¬ town advanced until he was headandhead with Lightspur and Olney the latter finding the exactingJohnstown pacemaking role too exacting Johnstown and Lightspur battled head andhead for some distance but the Wood ¬ ward youngster surely asserted his superior ¬ ity and drew out slightly over the Chicago colt near the finish Stout took no chances and kept Johnstown at his task which stood him in good stead at the end as Allegro closed with such a rush on the outside that he just failed to snatch victory from the son of Jamestown JamestownALLEGRO ALLEGRO BLOCKED BLOCKEDAfter After being outrun to the stretch Allegro attempted to make his run between horses but his path was blocked by Irvana running mate of Lightspur which had been right after the leaders from the start and the Dixiana gelding was sent by Joe Rosen to the outside to rush forward with a mighty surge being denied victory by only a stride Olney strideOlney was fourth at the heels of the lead ¬ ers as Irvana ran fifth while Hants and Detector completed the field never having entered contention Third Degree was de ¬ clared this morning because of a foot injury Continued on thirtyfourth pagej JOHNSTOWN NOSE WINNER OF BREEDERS FUTURITY Continued from first page The public got away to an auspicious start when Sunshine Boy at even money won the first event by a nose In the silks of John Chivis Blue Ridge Farms Lillian Roth just could not get by the choice after challenging at the furlong post but she fin ¬ ished three lengths before the Corsicana Stables Maderis Wicked Time was fourth among the eight lowly threeyearolds threeyearoldsStar Star Banner which competed in longer distances in her two previous starts and was overlooked in the wagering on the fourth event ran the six furlongs in 111 to easily defeat six other sprinting platers E K Thomas veteran mare won by five lengths over Mrs Edward Haughtons Bar ¬ bara A as J W farrishs Woodsia yras third
