FINALE AT SPORTSMANS Exceptionally Large Crowd Watches Last Program of Season Gato Makes a Runaway of Chicago ChicagoHandicap Handicap Speedy Booger and andTartarus Tartarus Account for Purses CICERO 111 Oct 31 Before a crowd al ¬ most as large as the one which witnessed Saturdays program and under ideal weather and track conditions the Illinois racing sea ¬ son was brought to a close at Sportsmans Park this afternoon The National Jockey Club presented a splendid program for the occasion two handicaps and a marathon race of two miles and a furlong vieing for the spotlight among the eight events eventsHolding Holding the place of honor on the card was the Chicago Handicap at a mile and seventy yards and it resulted in a onesided victory for Mrs A M Creechs Gato This threeyearold son of Whichone shouldering 107 pounds including jockey Delpha Castillo broke in front and stayed there completing the distance in 147 and winning by eight lengths Gato performed as an entry mate to Shining Heels and this filly accounted for third honors Masterpiece owned by C E Davison beating her a head for the place placeKhar Khar Fair finished fourth and led home five others which rounded out the field Our Reigh was the favorite here but he could not get going and was soundly beaten beatenGAINS GAINS STEADILY STEADILYGato Gato was in front by three lengths after going only a quarter and without having to be urged steadily increased his advantage until he made a runaway of it Shining Heels raced close up for about fiveeighths but she could not cope with her stable com ¬ panion and neither could Khar Fair which also raced in closest pursuit of the pace for a time timeChance Chance Ray had some early speed but had enough after about half of the journey and dropped back fast The others did not fig ¬ ure strongly in the running of the race which marked Gatos second victory of the meeting and his ninth of the year The yearThe principal suporting event was the Dearborn Handicap victory under the guid ¬ ance of J G Wilson The son of Jamestown scoring his second win of the meeting car ¬ ried his top weight of 118 pounds over the six and a half furlongs in 124 and this effort brought him in front by a length and a half at the wire wireSUPPLIES SUPPLIES CONTENTION CONTENTIONBright Bright supplied the keenest contention in the field of nine twoyearolds but he could not cope with the winner although he was best of the others He took the place two lengths before Oh Fudge while Matewhisk was another neck back in fourth place Jay D Bane which came in for some support eliminated himself by running out badly on the first turn while Denote also raced wide much of the way and was of little assistance to her more successful running mate The entry was a 2tol chance in the wagering wageringThe The first race contested at seven furlongs resulted in a popular victory for F Flynns Whip Snake with Firm Hand finishing sec ¬ ond and Falermian third For six furlongs Firm Hand battled Whip Snake for pace making honors but near the end Firm Hand seemed to tire and the Flynn mare guided by Robert Conley was able to score by al ¬ most a length Falermian closed well next to the rail to be only a half length far ¬ ther away at the end The victory was the first of the meeting for Whip Snake and those who supported her in the mutuels were rewarded to the extent of 940 for 2 2KNIGHT KNIGHT RIDES WELL WELLJ J T Taylors Tartarus hung up his second victory of the meeting and his fifth of the year in taking major honors over seven fur ¬ longs in the second race Jockey Melvin Knight kept the son of Torchilla in closest pursuit of Our Davids pace to the last eighth and then sent him to the front to score ultimately by two lengths Our David could not handle the winner but he held on well after losing the lead and took second money a length before Glowset Wowo was best of the others in the field of ten Our David was the favorite the winner paying a little more than 7 to 1 1J J F Wallaces Jane Hull a 14 to 1 chance in the betting made every post a winning one in the third event at a mile and seventy yards and carried apprentice Fred Scott to the first saddle success of his career Non connah made a challenge In the run through the last eighth but Jane Hull stuck gamely to her guns and lasted to score by a head Oatsie B came from a good way back to be third but still was four lengths behind the leaders at the wire Scott is a 17yearold Hot Springs Ark boy and is under contract to Larry Wellisch The annual Endurance Test in which the horses are asked to go two miles and a fur ¬ long saw Mrs H C Rumages Perfect One take the lead at the start and never relin ¬ quish it Apprentice Ted Atkinson did a good job of rating the Donnacona gelding in front and never had to subject him to strong pressure to hold his rivals at bay through ¬ out He ran the distance in 352 and won with six lengths to spare
