1 j I | | i I I j ♦ | RIDERS IN BIG RACE- | j KURTSINCERS RECORD LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5.— A majority of the riders who will participate in the sixty-fifth running of the Kentucky Derby have been through the mill of previous renewals, but only Charles Kurtsinger, who may not get into tomorrows race, has known the thrill of riding the winner. He is programmed on Challenge, a doubtful starter. Twice the thrill has come to Kurtsinger, the Louisville "flying Dutchman," for Twenty Grand carried him to victory over the one mile and one-quarter in 1931 in the track record time of 2:01%, and War Admiral repeated the feat for him in 1937. Kurtsinger started his Derby riding with Twenty Grand and then did not have a mount for two years. He was third with Agrarian in 1934 and seventh with He Did in 1936. Jimmy Stout has made three attempts at winning the Derby and probably his biggest disappointment came when Granville, the leading three-year-old of his year, unseated him at the start of the 1936 race. Last year Stout was astride Fighting Fox, which finished sixth, and in 1937 he piloted Scene-shifter into fifth place. If Stout can keep William Woodwards Johnstowns seasons record unblemished, it will be the third time the Woodward silks have been victorious. Gallant Fox in 1930 and Omaha in 1935 were furnished by the New York banker. Johnny Adams, the riding sensation from the West Coast, George Seabo, another saddle midget, Leon "Buddy" Haas, well-known to Kentucky and western racing, and Carroll Bierman will be up on their first Kentucky Derby starters. Adams will handle Herbert M. Woolfs Technician, whom he will be piloting for the first time. Haas will be astride T. M. Dor-, sett. He was up on the horse when he won j the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last fall and before becoming affiliated with the Joe , W. Brown stable he won races for various owners over the Derby course, Challedon by now should be perfectly at home with George Seabo, for the mite of a lad rode him in his three stakes victories last year. Bierman, one of the more capable young jockeys, is to handle E. F. Wood- wards Viscounty, with whom he won the Derby Trial last Tuesday. Nick Wall, El Chicos pilot, was engaged to ride one of the Maxwell Howard three-year-olds in the 1938 renewal and it probably would have been Stagehand if the son of Sickle had not suffered a throat ailment that kept him out of the race. Wall rode the horse in his Santa Anita Handicap victory. He was aboard Coldstream, the fourth horse in the 1936 Derby, so he can be classified as an experienced Derby rider. Alfred Robertson had his first Derby mount ten years ago when he was selected for the Warm Stables The Nut, which finished seventh. Not until he became affiliated witii the Milky Way Farm stable did he again ride in the race and his first mount in the orange, white and chocolate colors was The Fighter in 1936. The Bull Dog offspring was eleventh, but in 1937 Robertson brought Reaping Reward into third place back of War Admiral and Pompoon. Last year Mountain Ridge, whom he rode, was tenth and last. Robertson will handle On Location r.nd, al— -though the colts best races have beenrff* . muddy track, his connections believe itiim to be an improved horse. Basil James, who will direct Heather Broom, finished seventh with Dellor in 1937, and Silvio Coucci, Xalapa Clowns rider, has had two trys at the race. His first was on Spy Hill in 1934 and he came back to Louisville the following year to ride Plat Eye. Both finished in sixth place.
