HEIGHTS 111 July 13 The joint features of the days sport at Arlington Park were two divisions of the Wilmette Purse which were presented as the fifth and sixth races After Calumet Farms Taxes accounted for the first divi ¬ sion in easy fashion Smith Homans Don Creole captured the second in as close a finish as was seen all afternoon afternoonSecond Second and third respectively to Taxes were Visigoth and CoSport while Sir Jim James was runnerup and Bobs Boys third in the race taken by Don Creole CreoleDon Don Creole ridden by Alfred Robertson received a powerful hand ride to get a deci ¬ sion by inches over Sir Jim James Both were within striking distance of the pace from the beginning and when called upon on the stretch turn they responded gamely to the pressure of their riders They charged under the wire three lengths in front of Bobs Boys which had set all the pace for threequarters of a mile GIVES UP LEAD LEADSwinging Swinging into the final straightaway Bobs Boys gave up the lead to Sir Jim James and then just inside the last eighth Don Creole which had been lapped on them also passed Bobs Boys It was in the last stride that the Smith Homan sixyearold received the decision that gava him first money moneyBucking Bucking was best of the others which in ¬ cluded rr SiBCiLil Eagle Pass and Some Count Bobs Boys was the favorite the xnutuel return on the winner being 1340 for 2 2Don Don Creoles time for the mile was 136 He carried 110 pounds ANDERSON ON WINNER In racing to his triumph Taxes received a confident ride from jockey Irving Ander ¬ son whose guidance landed the Calumet fouryearold home in front by threelengths The son of Eternal was held under strong restraint for more than half the distance while CoSport was setting the pace After getting half way around the turn Taxes which had never been far away assumed command drew out approaching the final furlong and held his advantage to the end He was held at odds of 4 to 5 and the vic ¬ tory was his second in four engagements this year His other triumph also was achieved over the local course courseVisigoth Visigoth in hand and a trailer to the turn moved up with a rush thereafter and stood a sharp drive but he could not menace the winner while taking the place Visigoths move may have been illtimed but it is doubtful whether he could have overtaken Taxes even if his rider geld ¬ ing ridden by Jack Richard raced Sis Lot ¬ tie into submission before going half the distance and then opening a good lead held it to the end Although he won by two lengths Richard rode him out to forestall any tendency to quit he might have shown Sis Lottie maintained a forward position to the stretch and then gave way completely With her out of the way Honored Miss moved up to take second honors with Naria Kate running third t ue Gato another of the choices was Avithin striking distance of the leaders for a halfmile and then she too began to falter falterThe The second race also contested at six fur ¬ longs resulted in another success for the favorite players as H C Hoffmans Ducmiss turned back eleven horses of her own qual ¬ ity under the guidance of J E Oros Broad Liehts finished second and Sky Grenade third Ducmiss had the most early speed but when she could not shake off Broad Lights Dros took his mqunt back After reaching the stretch the Hoffman mare was put to a drive and responding well wore down Broad Lights near the end to win by a length In finishing third Sky Grenade was two lengths behind the runnerup and a head before Noticing Chi Chi was within striking distance of the leaders for about a halfmile and then had enough while Sanctity which was well supported in the mutuels was far back throughout throughoutEYE EYE KNOCKER DISAPPOINTS DISAPPOINTSWhile While the oddson Eye Knocker was dis ¬ appointing her backers the Woodvale Farms Florence M triumped at seven fur ¬ longs under the handling of apprentice Conn McCreary It was the first victory for both the horse and the rider and after get 1 ting to the front in the first eighth they were never headed Eye Knocker trying for her third victory in eight starts this year was far back throughout despite the pun ¬ ishment and vigorous handling she received from George Martin Buttons B raced in hottest pursuit of the winner to the last few yards and then she lost second money to Ideal Fungi by a neck The winners margin was a length and a quarter quarterPaul Paul Rennicks Lee Torch held at odds of a little more than 8 to 1 got the decision at the end of the mile of the fourth race which engaged a dozen cheaper sprinters Lee Torch won by only a nose as Blue Sheets finished second and Boston Sound fourth Boston Sound made all the pace and when he wearied of his task entering the stretch Blue Sheets and Lee Torch moved up to battle it out the rest of the way to the wire Harold West was astride the winner which was scoring his first tri ¬ umph in fifteen starts this year In running third Free Spirit was three and a half lengths behind the leaders Extended was made the favorite but he never threatened at any stage
