ALL CLAIMING RACES Thursdays Twilight Card at Latonia Dominated by Plater Class Return of Oppressive Heat Reflected ReflectedIn In Reduced Attendance Compared Comparedto to Wednesdays Bumper Crowd LATONIA Ky July 13 Claiming races dominated this afternoons program at La ¬ tonia with all of the eight contests being given over to them However in several in ¬ stances the cheaper grade of thoroughbreds provided highly interesting sport for the gathering of fans who sweltered in the in ¬ tense heat that returned to this vicinity Large fields competed in the majority of races and this had a tendency to hold the interest of those who viewed the offering offeringSharing Sharing the spotlight on the days program was the Elmwood Claiming Purse occupying fifth position on the card and the Verona Claiming Purse next in order The Elmwood was designed for twoyearold maidens and brought together a field of nine participants of which Holton Brothers Jo Mary which had been previously cavorting in more select company was installed the choice over Charles C Van Meters Balover BaloverSIX SIX FURLONGS DASH DASHIn In the subsequent affair a dash at six fur ¬ longs only seven went postward with the consistent Alice Highland from the stable of H G Shoemaker holding the popular position along with W E Harneds Apropos AproposThe The oppressive heat along with the pro ¬ gram of all claiming races was largely re ¬ sponsible for the reduction in attendance as gauged against that of yesterday when one of the largest week day throngs of the cur ¬ rent season was present for the presentation of the eight twilight races offered offeredA A capacity field of platers went postward in the opening race on the card which was decided over six furlongs and Al Evans Lopaz favorite in the wagering vindicated the faith of his supporters and romped to an eightlength victory Gold Thorn finished second and third money was gathered in by Audrey L which like Gold Thorn was overlooked in the speculation Under the guidance of jockey Bobbie Vedder Lopaz assumed the lead soon after the field was dispatched and steadily increased his mar ¬ gin as the race progressed progressedCOURAGEOUS COURAGEOUS EFFORT EFFORTJust Just Arrived displaying a courageous ef ¬ fort accounted for his second victory of the meeting in the second contest a sixfurlong dash in which eleven went postward but the chestnut gelding was extended to the limit in order to retain a head margin over Falls City at the end Split Silk which had been a strong factor for the most of the way Continued on thirtyfifth page ALL CLAIMING RACES Continued from first page held on long enough to be adjudged third Jockey Georgie South demonstrated excel ¬ lent judgment in his handling of the son of Infinite Predicament by restraining him off the pace until reaching the final quarter and then sending him into the lead Once in front Mrs Sparks colorbearer quickly opened up a good advantage but had to be roused in the final stages to ward off the challenge of Falls City CityAn An oddson favorite connected for the form students in the third race a fivefur ¬ long sprint for juveniles when Mrs C R Valentines Charlotte Dear led practically throughout to register by two lengths over Little Jack and paid 9 to 10 to her backers Moselem finished in third place Appren ¬ tice Ernie Hanke who made his return to the saddle today after serving a Suspension of five days rushed the bay filly into a commanding lead soon after the field of eight was sent oh its way and never re ¬ linquished the forward position thereafter
