Calexico from the Chicagoowned stable of C H Cleary stood a sharp drive at the hands of Johnny Longden and erot up in the closing strides to wear down the Milky Way Farms Up the Creek for a popular victory in the Waukegan Purse at Arlington Park today It was the second straight victory for the threeyearold son of Chicle and so confident was his backing that those who supported him in the mutuels received but 9 to 10 for their investments investmentsIn In racing to second place Up the Creek finished two and a half lengths before the third horse Robert Ramseys Risenfly while E W Duffys Chief Onaway led home the only other two contestants contestantsUp Up the Creek making only his third start of the year and continuing to show im ¬ provement set the pace and for a half mile or so Court Counsel was in closest pursuit with Calexico rated along behind them Go ¬ ing into the turn the Cleary threeyearold moved up into second place and still was kept in hand until straightening out for the run through the stretch stretchSPARKLING SPARKLING FINISH FINISHA A furlong from the wire Up the Creek still was two lengths in front but Longden was working furiously on Calexico and his powerful finish got the favorite to the front in the last few strides Risenfly swung wide into the stretch to make his bid but went over on Chief Ona ¬ way and Court Counsel about a furlong out and hurt both of their chances Court Counsel was virtually forced to pull up The only other starter was Timeful TimefulCalexico Calexico shouldering 118 pounds ran the mile on a good track in 138 138Ideal Ideal held his rivals safe the rest of the way The field was closing in on him near the end but Anderson held him together long enough to score by a neck Golden Cargo the favorite raced wide much of the way but closed well and finished sec ¬ ond with Jack Alex another neck back in third place Witchf in was best of the others in the field of ten juveniles The winner scoring his third victory in six race in which the Lexbrook Stables Colonel Ed defeated seven other cheaper sprinters at seven furlongs After a brief brush with Agotaras Colonel Ed an llto10 chance in the betting drew into the clear and never again was headed When outrun by the winner Agotaras dropped back until reaching the stretch and then came on again to take second place a length and a quarter behind the Lexbrook horse Boston Sound which made a run at the winner on the stretch turn held on fairly well in the drive but in finishing third lost the place by a length Fourth honors went to Guarantor GuarantorDesigner Designer a twoyearold son of For Fair and Lady Rochester was introduced to the rigors of racing in the third event and he showed the results of careful schooling and training by making every post a winning one for an easy score Owned by Mrs Kirby Ramsey and ridden by Willie Garner Designer ran the five and a half furlongs in 107 and won by five lengths as Philyra ran second and Copin third The Ramsey gelding left his rivals far behind on the turn and was only coasting through the stretch to achieve his impressive score Phi ¬ lyra may not have been able to beat the winner but she might have been closer to him but for meeting some interference on the turn Millpomp was the favorite here but he raced wide much of the way and never seriously threatened while Palsie also well supported only showed some early speed speedSHAKERTOWN SHAKERTOWN AGAIN AGAINThe The fourth race another test of five and a half furlongs for twoyearolds resulted in victory for Mrs Roy Carruthers Shaker town scoring her fourth victory in eight starts The daughter of Hadagal followed the pacemaking Crumpet and Brother Higher to the stretch and then when Crum ¬ pet gave way the Carruthers filly set sail for Brother Higher She took command just inside the final furlong and won finally by a length and a half J E Oros handled her and she paid 3 to 1 in the mutuels Brother Higher was good enough to be sec ¬ ond but Crumpet finished far back in the ruck Liberty Queen was third and Acquin the favorite was next after an unimpressive effort
