HOT SUN BENEFICIAL Helps Dry Out Latonia Track and Brings Out GoodSized Crowd Erlanger Purse Thursdays Feature Featureof of Twilight Card orEight Races Interest in Jockey Contest LATONIA Ky July 20 As a hot sun beat down on and helped to dry a muddy track a goodsized weekday crowd filed into the Latonia stands this afternoon to attend the nineteenth program of this twentyseven day meeting Eight races were carded cardedFinest Finest of the events presented was the longest race run at this meeting Tearout winner of the Latonia Derby in 1935 was given a hearty backing in the mile and one quarter fray frayThe The brown sevenyearold gelding winner here in his last outing has always done well on the Latonia course and he was especially fond of it today because its softness gave comfort to his ailing legs He shouldered the silks of Edward Wright WrightAGNES AGNES KNIGHT BACKED BACKEDAgnes Agnes Knight Frank P Letelliers four yearold filly made her bid in the ten fur ¬ longs affair for her third triumph of the meeting She had a good following and so did Mrs C C Normans Sam Alexander an old campaigner which loves muddy going Others which competed for the Erlanger Purse were John Allgeyers Laura Kiev and C L Groans Lina Mac MacAnother Another sparkling contest offered was the Elmwood Farm Purse a sprint in which twelve juveniles met Charlotte Dear owned by Charles R Valentine tried for the second win of her career in the five and onehalf furlongs event eventThough Though the track was in an adverse con ¬ dition and a number of late scratches were registered the fields were well filled through ¬ out the program The leading jockeys of the meeling R L Vedder and G South each credited with twentyone wins as the pro ¬ gram opened continued to command the attention of the fans and close tab was kept on their performances performancesROSE ROSE K TAKES OPENER OPENERRose Rose K from the racing forces of Kranz Tracy scored her third win of the year in the opening race when apprentice Chuck Durando piloted her home a half length in front of J J Brumages Happy Tidings Galley Sweep owned by Doc Becker took the show After the favorite Happy Tid ¬ ings began to tire in the drive Rose K came from behind to win despite the fact that she had lost much ground from racing on the outside most of the six furlongs King Tea forced the early pace and then dropped back and Galley Sweep came from the rear to take third thirdShine Shine o Night under jockey R L Ved ders brilliant ride raced home the winner of the second race scoring the initial vic ¬ tory of her racing career as six other juveniles followed in her wake Carrying the silks of W C Hobson the bay miss won by a length and onehalf from J W Par rishs Griddle while Junius W Bells Mis tucky the favorite trailed in third place placeYoung Young Charley Durando came right back in the third to stage a brilliant ride astride Zuni and score his second straight win of the afternoon He reserved his mount off the early pace and then came from behind in the stretch with the bay racer to win going away Wise Joyce from the Glass and Gano stable took second place while Henry For ¬ rests Swale garnered the show Zuni carry ¬ ing the silks of Mrs Rose Hernandez paid his backers 800 for 2
