APPROVE CHALMACS VICTORY Empire City Stewards Consider Foul Claim but Reject It Second Saddle Triumph of Day for Jockey JockeyF F A Smith Early Morn Second Secondin in Main Contest NEW YORK N Y July 21 After thir ¬ teen minutes of questioning and deliberation the stewards decided to approve Chalmacs victory in the 5000 top and 4000 bottom claimer that outshone the other six races on todays program at Empire City M Calvert who piloted Last Message to third place in the five and threequarters furlongs dash lodged a claim of foul against Chalmac and his rider F A Smith SmithIt It appeared to many of the 6500 spectators that Chalmac in moving forward rapidly came over on Last Message inside the six ¬ teenth post bumping her slightly and im ¬ peding her Calvert and Smith went before the stewards immediately after the race Be ¬ fore the officials finished their deliberations they sent for Donald Meade who had piloted Early Morn As time wore on the crowd be ¬ came convinced that the claim of foul would be allowed The contrary proved true trueHALF HALF DOZEN STARTERS STARTERSOnly Only a half dozen horses ranging in age from three years upward went postward in this event which held fifth place on the card Last Message representing the Tall Trees Stable was second choice at 9 to 2 Chalmac threeyearold son of Challenger II and Peggy Mac by Tryster closed at 10 to 1 1Roy Roy T was first in motion at the start with Last Message and Early Morn next in motion Meadc soon was in front with the choice Inside the furlong post Early Morn began to slacken pace a trifle and Last Message and Chalmac began to gain on her Seventy yards from the wire the favorite still enjoyed a slight lead but Chalmac on the outside and Last Message in between gathered speed in the final strides Chalmac won by a head in 108 It seemed as if Last Message was going to head Early Morn but at the end she was third a neck behind the favorite and three lengths before Roy T The latter which forced the pace to the head of the home lane tired badly in the final sixteenth sixteenthSmiths Smiths victory astride Chalmac which is owned by the Crescent Stable and trained by J Wessler was his second of the day His first was achieved in the opener aboard Maurice Peikins Star of Dondra
