Wendall Eads drove the Calumet whirl ¬ wind through the pacemaker Your Chance and the rail at the top of the stretch and moved off to register by two and a quarter lengths at the direct expense of Mioland as the latter Californian beat Greentree Sta ¬ bles Hash a neck for the place Four lengths farther back the pacemaking Your Chance easily lead Ringie for fourth in this small but brilliant field of five attracted in a 2500 overnight purse purseThough Though Whirlaway was essaying to give weight on the scale to all but Mioland un ¬ der an impost of 109 pounds which included one overweight he was made a topheavy public choice and paid just 350 for 2 Whirlaway was drifting out from the eighth pole home and Mioland followed him out the pair finishing closer to the outside than the inside boundary of the track but he was good enough to win unextended in 143 for the mile and a sixteenth on a fast track trackUpon Upon returning to the winners enclosure the Chicagoan would not have blown out a candle candleLONDON LONDON TOWN CHASE WINNER The Henry of Navarre was worth just 1650 to the winner but overshadowed the Appleton Memorial Cup Steeplechase which was the days stake the same stride Whirlaway remained loser up than usual as he went away under wraps the first furlong Then Richards let Your Chance move off to a lead of a length and Ringie who essayed to go along with him was quickly shaken off Eads did not hurry Whirlaway through the back stretch and Arcaro evidently convinced the colt he rode in the Derby and Preakness was the one to whip took Hash back and rated along just outside him himThis This strategy not only conserved Hash for the supreme moment when Whirlaway would begin his run but also prevented the coljt from thinking of going out Around the turn Your Chance still was dusting along on a lead of a couple of lengths and Hash had Mioland closest to him But as Hash and Whirlaway started closing up Haas pulled to the outside with Mioland and let the two through between him and the rail railWhirlaway Whirlaway beat Hash to the hole between Your Chance and the rail at the hot corner and in a twinkling had the Widener horse beaten and was in front and moving away Hash followed him through the knothole on the rail and inaugurated his run At the eighth pole Whirlaway started out and Arcaro drew his whip on Hash Mioland followed Whirlaway toward the outside and thats the way they finished with Whirlaway leading the others and galloping while Hash was driving but Mioland beat him a head for the place without any pressure from Haas
