EIGHT THIRTY Workwatchers witnessed a splendid mile move of 138 by the George D Wldener handicap star at Belmont Park yesterday morning REFLECTIONS By CHALLENGER Peter Pan Cap at Belmont Friday Renewal Has Drawn Divisions Best Named After Great Whitney Sire Pennant Black Toney Best Sons Of late years quite a few races have been named after great horses of the past On Tuesday at Belmont they staged the Henry of Navarre an event named after the threeyearold which was to prove the nemesis of the immortal Domino One of the most remarkable breeding incidents in American annals is the continued success of the Domino clan and in staging the Peter Pan Handicap on Friday the Belmont officials have honored a horse which has been a tower of strength for the Domino tribe in this country Both Domino and his son Commando lived but a few years after they were sent to stud Commando was to sire some fine horses and among them the trio of Celt Colin and Peter Pan The latter foaled in 1904 was a son of Commando Cinder ¬ ella by Celt As a twoyearold he won four of his eight starts and as a threeyear old six of his nine starts including the Belmont Stakes Bred by James R Keene at the famous Castleton Stud he was out of Cinderella a mare imported fvom England at a cost of 3000 Retired to the breeding farm in 1908 he was sent to France to stand for the season of 1912 In 1913 he was returned to this country as a result of the death of his owner and having already made his reputation was sold at auction to Harry Payne Whitney for 38000 38000Though Though a fine race horse Peter Pans name will live in history by his accomplishments as a stallion At the Whitney stud he was one of the most successful horses of his years siring Tryster Macaw Noah and Exodus but the two who stood above all his others were Pennant and Black Toney Some stallions have the powers to successfully beget fine sons and daughters and Peter Pan must be included in this group Mated with the mare Polly Flinders he begotx two such daughters as Prudery the dam of Victorian and Prudish the dam of Whiskery Other daughters included Vexatious dam of Diuvolo Yankee Maid dam of Bostonian and Flyatit dam of Top Flight the greatest twoyearold of her year and still holder of the juvenile earning record of 219000 One of his sons was Peter Hastings which came into prominence as the sire of Mata Hari Another good son was Noah sire of Pairbypair a half brother to Myrtlewood the sire of this yeaVs good twoyearold Blue Pair Pairbypair the property of Fred B Koontz the Oklahoma breeder now is standing at the Military Stock Farm of John S Wiggins Though Tryster an undefeated twoyearold was not a pronounced success in stud lie was the sire of the good racer Try Sympathy At twentynine years of age Peter Pan died in December 1932 His son Pennant was a Futurity winner but due to an accident did not race at three and four but returned to the wars as a five and sixTyearold His fame like that of Peter Pan always will be associated with his success in stud He was the sire of Crystal Pennant Valorous Bunting Rolled Stockings Jolly Roger Dauber and Equipoise the latter one of the best horses to race during the present century Pennants greatest success was with Ben Brush mares and Equipoise is but one example of the Domino Ben Brush cross Though handicapped by a bad foot he had the courage to carry on often under conditions which were against him His sudden death since likened to that of Domino and Commando was one of the greatest tragedies to befall the breeding industry during the present generation At first it was thought by some that Equipoise might not come through as a progenitor But just one of his twoyearolds of last season was Level Best considered by some the horse of the year but acknowledged by all to be the champion juvenile Black Toney was another of Peter Pans great sons Though a small horse lie was beautifully molded with a tremendous amount of quality He won the Valuation Stakes nnd the Independence Handicap and yet here too is the case of a horse who always will be remembered for his ability in stud rather than his racing He begot Black Maria Miss Jemima Befuddled Breakfast Bell Black Helen and many other fine racing daughters Black Maria was the winner of the Kentucky Oaks Metropolitan Handicap and Ladies Handicap Black Helen like her sire was small but also like him she was of exquisite quality good action and the superior courage which is the badge of the Peter Pan tribe She was at first considered too small to train but won seven races in 3934 before her defeat at Pimllco and started off 1935 by winning the Florida Derby She had the distinction of being the first filly to win the American Derby since Modesty Avon the inaugural running Her sister Big Hurry was the winner of the 3938 Selima Stakes and both are now in stud at Idle Hour Farm Black Toneys sons included Black Gold Broadway Jones Brokers Tip Black Servant Balladier and Bimelech Balladier now is stand ¬ ing at Idle Hour Farm and Bimelech was retired to stud early this year yearFrom From the one horse Peter Fan a solid branch of the Domino clan is now evolv ¬ ing Among others Blue Larkspur Balladier Pairbypair Dauber and Bimelech are carrying on his blood It may be that in his short career Equipoise has sired a son which will prove his worth From any angle the story of this horse and what he has accomplished is one of the most romantic pages of modern breeding Market Wise the son of Brokers Tip is just one of the eligibles for the Peter Pan and should he by chance be returned the winner he will not only bring honor to his sire but to the entire Peter Pan clan He will have his job cut out for him however as among the eligibles are Whirlaway Porters Cap Monday Lunch Master Henry Sheriff Culkin and the speedy King Cole Ocean Blue also is an eligible and like Market Wise would bring honor to the clan if returned a winner in that he is by Blue Larkspur the son of Black Servant he in turn the son of Black Toney The Peter Pan Handicap was inaugurated last year and was won by Andy 1C Tomorrows re ¬ newal should prove to be one ofxthe best threeyearold races staged at Belmont Park this season
