ACORN STAKES WON BY CALUMETS PROUD ONE MILE RUN IN 137 35 BY BLENHEIM II FILLY FILLYStaves Staves Off Great Stretch Bid of Cis Marion for Neck Decision Col Teddy Also Wins for Wright WrightNEW NEW YORK N Yf May 21 Another im ¬ portant stake fell to the Calumet Farm of Warren Wright when Proud One carried that sportsmans flashing devils red banner to a hardearned triumph in the eleventh running of the Acorn which is Americas outstanding mile stake for threeyearold fillies and it took place on a sunny after ¬ noon of sport at Belmor Park Well han ¬ dled by Wendell Eads this fleet homebred daughter of Blenheim II drove to the end of the midweek special with just a neck margin showing before Ella K Brysons stoutly closing Cis Marion the runnerup and recent winner of the Pimlico Oaks Marshall Fields Up the Hill another who was rated early while Proud One ran down the pacemaking choice Tangled accounted for the third award just half a length be ¬ hind Cis Marion and two lengths before Nasca as that maid wound up fourth in a sparkling field of eleven elevenProud Proud One just lasted to withstand Cis Marions rush but richly deserved the honors and enjoyed extensive support in the tote play herself paying 910 for the customary 2 The bay filly covered the mile on the fast racing strip in the corking time of 137 which marked the second swiftest running of the Acorn Damaged Goods 137 in this event last spring stands as the stake record Incidentally none of the first three at the finish is an eligible for the rich Coaching Club American Oaks later in the current meeting Proud One was winning by far the most important victory of her career and earned 7275 for the Calumet coffersJONES coffers JONES ACCEPTS AWARD AWARDThe The sport at the spacious fashionable and ultra modern course on Hempstead Turn ¬ pike continues to be favored by May weather at its best and a crowd of 14402 turned out to see Proud Ones handsome ac ¬ counting in the Acorn This gathering marked a considerable increase over the 9253 present the corresponding day last spring Following the running of the Acorn trainer Ben Jones appeared in the winners enclosure to receive the piece of plate going to the winning owner on behalf of Warren Wright who is absent at Calumet in Ken ¬ tucky tuckyIt It was one of the most exciting of all the Acorn runnings with most of the crowd in doubt as to whether Proud One had lasted until the numbers were flashed on the tote board boardCassidy Cassidy found the eleven in the Acorn well behaved at the gate and they went away on the same stride with Arcaro hus ¬ tling Tangled right to the top and Eads placing Proud One in second place just behind her It was a twohorse race between this pair all through the back stretch and around the long sweeping turn into the front path Tangled moved along under a light hold about a length and onehalf in front Of Proud One going down the far side but Eads had dead aim on the Greentree filly and was conserving his mount mountMidway Midway on the turn Proud One moved toward Tangled on the outside and entering the stretch Arcaro went to a drive drawing his whip as Proud One went at his mount with a determined challenge Tangled was spent however and dropped out of it stead ¬ ily from the threesixteenths marker leav ¬ ing Proud One a length in front at the eighth post However from the furlong marker home Cis Marion and Up the HiL were swarming down outside Proud One like fresh horses and Proud Ones backers helc their breath as they raced the final yards with Cis Marions hooded head creeping steadily up outside Proud One The latter was digging in for all he was worth under Eads drive of hand and heel and she barely lasted long enough to save the day dayVIRTUAL VIRTUAL BALL OF FIRE FIRECis Cis Marion was shy on early speed and far back through the first furlongs but Mc Creary had her on the outside free of trou ¬ ble She took the overland on the turn at the loss of much more distance than that by which she was beaten and her case still appeared hopeless at the threesixteenths pole But from the furlong marker home Cis Marion was a ball of fire and rapidly running down the leading Proud One She couldnt have missed with another stride to go or had she saved just a few feet on the turn turnUp Up the Hill was reserved several lengths back the first part of it and when straight ¬ ened in the stretch Meade asked her for her best speed and she responded with a good burst that carried her out of the pack and found her lapped on the first two at the line beaten less than a length for all the money Nasca broke faster than usual but was outrun early She had dead aim on the main award around the turn but was hanging through the final furlong Grand Flame tailed the pace of Tangled and the winner closest through the back stretch and into the turn where she quit The factorsMrs others never were factors Mrs Parker Comings Attention getting ready for the Belmont Stakes turned in a frontrunning score in the Glorifier Purse a class C event for threeyearolds which was the secondary offering The Equipoise colt registered in a drive over Jock Whit ¬ neys Gun Bearer and had to run the mile in 137 to make the accounting accountingAttention Attention was a strong choice and paid 390 in what was his second start of the year and his first victory At the finish he was a length and a half in front of Gun Bearer as the latter led John Clarks Waller five lengths for the place Only half a dozen started
