SWEEPIDA HAS CHANCE TO GAIN MORE LAURELS LAURELSScore Score in Breeders7 Handicap at Hollywood Would Give Him Place in Californias Hall of Fame FameINGLEWOOD INGLEWOOD Calif June 5 Since the turn of the century California has pro ¬ duced five thoroughbreds whose names still linger in the memory of old turf fans and that compact little group may be joined by another member after Saturdays running of the Golden State Breeders Handicap at Hollywood Park The Breeders Handicap is a 10000 fixture for homebred threeyear olds and upward and Harry C Hills Sweep ida would have to be considered a candi ¬ date for Californias equine hall of fame if he happens to win this important event eventGenerally Generally considered the best horses raised in California in the last forty years or so are Dr Leggo Morvich Runstar Alexander Pantages and Ervast ErvastDr Dr Leggo was the first Bred at Napa and raced by the late Charles McCafferty he won the California Derby at Emeryville in 1905 and in addition scored many other notable triumphs Next came Morvich which distinguished himself by winning the 1922 Kentucky Derby under the colors of Benjamin Block He was the first and only Californiabred horse ever to capture the Churchill Downs classic and he went on to compile lifetime earnings of 165909 165909RUNSTAR RUNSTAR BIADE TURF HISTORY HISTORYRunstar Runstar bred and raced by Adolph Spreckels made turf history in 1924 by triumphing over Osprey and Cherry Tree in the Coffroth Handicap and was hailed by some an even greater horse than Morvich Alexander Pantages named for the man under whose silks he accomplished his greatest success is remembered as a horse which was poison at any distance from six furlongs to two miles He later proved a successful sire sireOf Of Ervast it was said that few horses could keep up with the Baron Long flyer over sprint distances when he was right and his record too is studded with bril ¬ liant performances performancesAt At this time Sweepida stands out as the leading candidate for a place in this select group He last year won the Santa Anita Derby and then came here to capture the Breeders Handicap and also the Will Rogers Handicap Last winter he dis ¬ tinguished himself further by capturing the Santa Catalina Handicap Santa Anitas big event for Californiabred older horses horsesIn In Saturdays test Sweepida must shoulder top weight of 126 pounds and under that impost he will be asked to concede from two to thirtyone pounds to his rivals Twentyfour horses were nominated for the race and in the light of the importance of the race a large field is expected to go post wardBIG ward BIG BEN RATED HIGH HIGHRated Rated closest to the Hill performer is Ne l S McCarthys speedy Big Ben which however appears to be most effective at sprint distances He will be required to shoulder SaturdayOther 124 pounds Saturday Other likely candidates for the Breeders Handicap are Needmore Stables Rolling Ball T H Nesbitts Wilton J J Budds The Shaugraun Miss Anita Kings Emerald Bay the Altadena Stables Gold Bubble Neil S McCarthys Tin Pan Alley Lawrence Barkers Ardenell and the Circle M Ranchs Allessandro AllessandroBesides Besides the Breeders Handicap two other interesting features are on Saturdays card One is the Syphax Handicap and the other the Pytho Handicap nominations for each of which close today Each is worth 3000 The Syphax is a sixfurlong sprint for three yearolds and the Pytho a race over the same distance for fouryearolds and up ¬ ward
