JOHN R MACOMBER SILKS IN DOUBLE AT SUFFOLK DOWNS DOWNSSide Side Arm and Red Vulcan Annex IVIajor Honors in Top Offerings OfferingsBOSTON BOSTON Mass June 5 A typical New England northeastern storm visited Suffolk Downs today and following the heavy rains of the early morning hours converted the racing strip into a sea of slop It was ap ¬ propriate that the feature offering bore the title of the Gloucester Purse As a result of the track conditions scratches were numer ¬ ous throughout the day dayIn In the headline attraction the Gloucester having its decision over the mile distance only four paraded postward It provided the opportunity for Side Arm to chalk up the second victory of the afternoon for the blue and gold quartered silks of John R Macom ber Red Vulcan had turned the trick in the Point of Pines Purse It also permitted jockey Wholey to round out a double he having ridden both the Macomber represen ¬ tatives tativesSide Side Arm reached the close of the mile with better than a couple of lengths to spare over the Plymouth Rock Handicap winner J U Grattons Liberty Franc Flying Sil ¬ ver from the Mrs T Haskos string earned the show position before Purcellville who races in the interest of A S Pierce PierceLiberty Liberty Franc making the most of his early speed sprinted into a clear lead by the time the turn into the back stretch was reached Purcellville chased along in near ¬ est attendance Wholey permitted Side Arm to settle into his stride without being rushed in the early stages stagesINCREASES INCREASES LEAD SLOWLY SLOWLYDown Down the far side of the track the Grat ton colt increased his lead slowly as he raced under a snug hold Purcellville was well before the Macomber gelding and Fly ¬ ing Silver was last lastLiberty Liberty Franc was being rated along out in front With but three furlongs left Wholey roused Side Arm The PeteeWrack gelding responded readily He went up on the inside of Purcellville and was soon chas ¬ ing the pacesetter The Liberty Limited colt was still clear straightening out for the run to the finish Side Arm was moving up with grounddevouring strides and midway of the stretch was at the saddle girths of the leader Liberty Franc when overtaken by the winner gave way Once in the lead Side Arm drew out readily Liberty Franc was easily superior to the others in the company and Flying Silver defeated Pur ¬ cellville a halfdozen lengths for her share of the 1400 prize prizeDespite Despite the adverse conditions that pre ¬ vailed it was a surprisingly large throng1 which was on hand to witness the sport Red Vulcan came to the aid of the favorite players and registered convincingly in the Point of Pines Purse The John R Ma ¬ comber colt came to the end of the six furlongs better than three lengths in front ° f Shirt from the foiled MarshaU Fteld Fteldwas was tSrt n Brooks Blue Lijy
