BATTLE COLORS RATED HIGHLY FOR RICH HOLLYWOOD DERBY DERBYAssumes Assumes New Importance Due to Score in Will Rogers Handicap HandicapINGLEWOOD INGLEWOOD Calif June 6 Victory Sat ¬ urday of Circle M Ranchs Battle Colors in the Will Rogers Handicap a sevenfurlong test for threeyearolds surrounds this young racer with new importance as a possible threat for Hollywood Derby honors Cir ¬ cle Ms gelded son of Man o War picked up 124 pounds top weight and whipped eight others his own age to earn 7925 and place himself in the forefront among the locally quartered nominees for the 25000 Derby which will be run here on July 12 12Battle Battle Colors r i the seven furlongs in the excellent time of 123 and won by a length and onehalf as Mrs C D Harpers Strong Arm ran second and Louis B Mayers filly Painted Veil third They too turned in noteworthy efforts but they hardly were matches for the Circle M runer at least not on this occasion occasionAmong Among those which rounded out the field was Lawrence Barker Pirat winner of the California Derby during the recent Bay Meadows season One notable absentee from the Will Rogers field was Hugh S Nesbitts Kentucky Derby runnerup Staretor which sidestepped the issue in favor of later en ¬ gagements In the light of Battle Colors excellent performance in last Saturdays stake Hollywood Park fans would welcome a StaretorThere race in which he might meet Staretor There are no more stakes on the Holly ¬ wood program exclusively for threeyear olds before the Derby comes up for decision but there will be a number of overnight fea ¬ tures in addition to several stakes for three yearolds and vpward The next big feature in which Battle Colors and Staretor could come to grips is the Inglewood Handicap a 10000 added event at a mile and a sixteenth scheduled for June 21
