BLUE PAIR APPARENTLY IS READY FOR HIS BEST BESTLooks Looks Better and Has Filled Out Considerably Since Derby Effort Four Engagements at Suffolk SuffolkCRETE CRETE 111 June 6 Mrs Vera b Braggs Blue Pair a colt who has boxoffice signifi ¬ cance up in Boston will leave here for the Land of the Bean and the Cod on Saturday after having been freshened up since he fin ¬ ished out of the money behind Whirlaways winning effort in the Kentucky Derby But ie sharp youngster who will leave here on tie weekend is a different thorougbred han the one who stopped so rapidly at Churchill Downs on Derby Day The bay son of Pairbypair and the Blue Pete mare Dva B appears to be a lot better horse now than he was on Derby day He looks better and has filled out considerably considerablyTrainer Trainer Willie Crump the same man who eveloped Head Play has gone easy with 31ue Pair since taking over the Pairbypair colt from Charles C Van Meter That vet ¬ eran Kentuckian who developed Blue Pair as a twoyearold after buying him for 600 at the Saratoga sales had given him a stiff prep to get him ready for the exacting mile and a quarter of the run for the roses at Churchill Downs and the colt was honed own pretty fine going into that engage ¬ ment Just before the Derby Blue Pair showed up with a sore back and a splint just below the knee on the right leg and Crump announced at that time he was going to let up on his Derby candidate immediately after hat race win or lose loseThe The former jockey has pursued that course and from the way he looked in his stall Crumps policy is about to pay dividends According to his groom Blue Pair is eating up everything in sight these days and the splint has gone down so that even workouts dont bother him He didnt look as though anything could bother him A brightbay colt Blue Pairs coat was shining like silk There is no reason why he couldnt go on to e a real good race horse despite the fact hat he couldnt whip Whirlaway in thB Derby DerbySTAKE STAKE NOMINATIONS NOMINATIONSBlue Blue Pair is nominated to the Common ¬ wealth Constitution Yankee and Massa ¬ chusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs The Commonwealth is at six furlongs the Consti ¬ tution a mile the Yankee a mile and three sixteenths and the Massachusetts a mile and oneeighth oneeighthThe The appearance of the son of Pairbypair in any of these four engagements will be definite assurance that a huge crowd will urn out because Blue Pair was a box office attraction in New England last year while piling up a winning streak of six straight which culminated in his victory in the May ¬ flower Stakes then worth 10000 added but since raised in value to 15000 On the day that Blue Pair won the Mayflower Stakes a crowd of close to 40000 people turned out to see him run because his impressive winning streak had made his name almost a house lold one in the Down East sector sectorAs As a matter of fact Blue Pairs reputa ¬ tion preceded him into New England Blue Pair romped home in his first outing at Boston and he was never beaten over the East Boston course In addition to victories in four allowance races and the Mayflower Stakes Blue Pair also won the Miles Stand ish Stakes That race is limited to twoyear old colts and geldings and Blue Pair whipped Port and Blue Tvvink In the Mayflower Stakes he took the measure of Big Stakes and Blensign and Van Meter announced that he was going to return to Kentucky and reserve the colt for his engagement in the theBreeders Breeders Futurity at Keeneland Maurice Berger who has since retired from the saddle rode Blue Pair in his Suf folk Downs sweep and went to Kentucky to ride him there in the fall Before Van Meter shipped out of Boston for home how ¬ ever he had received a couple of offers for the colt coltBlue Blue Pair passed his fall tests with flying Colors finishing second to Whirlaway and in advance of Our Boots in the Breeders Futurity His spring prep for the Derby was also impressive particularly his feat of whipping Whirlaway in the Derby Trial Stakes at Churchill Downs Bids were still coming into Van Meter for the colt how ever and he finally sold him to Mrs Vera S Bragg YANKEE HANDICAP PREPS Both the Commonwealth and the Consti tution are reserved for threeyearolds and in neither of those races will he be called upon to run against a Whirlaway B N Kanes Halcyon Boy won the threequarter mile Commonwealth in 1940 and Wesley Sears Dusky Duke won the mile Constitu ¬ tion These races should serve to be excel ¬ lent preps for the 25000 added Yankee Handicap on July 4 and at the same time he will be shooting for substantial prize money Should he be successful in the Yankee there is no reason why he shouldnt be pointed for the 50000 added Massachusetts Handicap A real good threeyearold may be able to cope with the handicap division this year as did Menow in 1938 when he won the gallop for 50000 in Boston On that occasion he whipped a field which in ¬ cluded War Admiral among others othersFollowing Following the Suffolk Downs meeting Blue Pair is expected to be shipped back to prepare for the Arlington Classic as there will be plenty of time between the Massachusetts Handicap on July 16 and the Classic on July 26 to get ready for the three yearold feature of Chicago racing Dixianas Sirocco a hardhitting colt who ran into hard luck in the Yankee Handicap and other stakes at Boston was able to accomplish successfully a program which approximated that last year when he whipped a field which included Bimelech in the Arlington Park race Sirocco however didnt run in the Massachusetts Handicap as Jimmy Smith who was then training Dixianas string pre f erred to reserve him for the threeyeai old race rather than have him attempt to whip the older horses in the Suffolk Downs fea ¬ ture
