Good Chance Wins Steeplechase Event EventKnights Knights Quest Beaten in Jervis Spencer Vincentive Qualifies for Preakness PreaknessPIMLICO PIMLICO Md May 3 Sdkeby Stables Good Chance added another stake triumph to his record when he scored in the Jervis Spencer Steeplechase Handicap at Pimlico this afternoon The 10yearold raced up in the closing strides to snatch a head vic ¬ tory from Lieut Bayard Sharps Knights Quest and took down the 3000 winners share of that fixture the steeplechase high ¬ light of this meeting Third position among the 11horse field went to Lieut G H Pete Bostwicks Cottesmore CottesmorePerhaps Perhaps as much importance was at ¬ tached to the Parkway Purse as to the feature for it brought out W L Branns Preakness eligible Vincentive who pre ¬ vailed by two and onehalf lengths over Greentree Stables Noonday Sun The lat ¬ ter in turn nosed out Black Grip the early pacemaker Vincentive who took command in the stretch after pegging Black Grips pace ran the threequarters in 111 to qualify for his engagement against Count Fleet Saturday SaturdayMandingham Mandingham Eliminated EliminatedThe The race was marred unfortunately when Mandingham coupled with the win ¬ ner as the Rokeby Stable entry was elim ¬ inated That rather prominent jumper of last season weaved into the first fence and in trying to negotiate the hazard he threw his rider E Roberts The latter was not injured injuredThe The Rokeby Stable entry was installed favorite In scoring his initial success of the season Good Chance brought about a 570 for 2mutuel and negotiated the two miles in 3 56 56Although Although a few contestants acted up prior to the start the break was evenly effected Knights Quest possessed of a good turn of speed went to the front at the outset That son of Sir Gallahad HI Escadrille tried to make a runaway affair pi the test Under strong urging by his trainerrider William Passmore the geld ¬ ing increased his advantage over rivals at the first turn of the field fieldGood Good Chance placed within striking dis ¬ tance fenced well and experienced no dif ¬ ficulty in staying up with the first flight However it appeared during the first mile and a quarter that Good Chances attempt at catching the leading Knights Quest would be futile In spite of that fact W Leonard astride Good Chance kept knocking and his tactics soon began to shorten Knights Quests margin At the fifteenth fence Leonards opportunity oc ¬ curred Knights Quest began to tire when negotiating that fence and in so doing lost the race for Good Chance came up fast to collar him and then led him across the line
