REFLECTIONS By Nelson Dunstan Queens County Opens Aqueduct Astoria Reneval Wednesday Two 50000 Events Top Meeting Impressive Stakes at Chicago ChicagoNEW NEW YORK N Y June 3 John I Day son of the late and famous John One is now connected with the Thoroughbred Racing Associations Hes a fine turf writer Edna Lof tus widow of Jimmy who was buried Thurs ¬ day will be given a good position at Gar ¬ den State Park prov ¬ ing once again the turf takes care of its own Salvator fa ¬ mous turf scribe is suffering from serious eye trouble Hundreds will au nu a dinner in his honor at Chi ¬ cago on the night of July 6 Never was the turf so short of good horses Or ¬ chids to the California Breeders Associa ¬ tion for their frank statement on the Cali ¬ fornia situation It was the late Walter Vosburgh who said Who knows anything about race horses Very few people and they only know how little they know Dave Woods of Pimlico and Hialeah is soon to don a uniform Sid Peders wife just phoned to say that the AJ war correspondent has written her I have not had a bath in weeks and adds The Ger ¬ man atrocities when known will disgust every person in America Calumet will be heading to the Mid West soon Tom Shehan war correspondent will be here for six months then back in the thick of it once again againSeems Seems only yesterday that the Faumonok was run at Jamaica but here on Monday they are running the 10000 Queens County Handi ¬ cap at Aqueduct a meeting that will extend until Saturday July 1 During the meeting eight other stakes events will be contested namely the Astoria Carter Tremont Shevlin Gazelle Dwyer Great American and the timehonored Brooklyn Handicap It is a well balanced card with every division in for recognition The Astoria to be run this Wednesday is for twoyearold fillies and the 67 nominations include the most royallybred group of babies of the weaker sex in this years crop On the coming weekend the 10000 Carter Handicap will be the feature of the day and this race has at ¬ tracted many of the top sprinters in the older ranks On the following weekend or June 17 the 10000 Shevlin will be run for threeyear olds and while Calumet is conspicu ¬ ous by its absence the Widenertrio of Platter Lucky Draw and Who Goes There are all named and ap ¬ pear to be allpowerful allpowerfulAqueduct Aqueduct has two of the many 50000 added events on their stakes program namely the Dwyer and the Brooklyn Handicap Both of these events are steeped in the traditions of a bygone era The Dwyer to be run on Saturday June 24 is at one mile and a quarter for three yearolds Just as in the Shevlin the Calumet Farm candidates are conspicuous by their absence as they will have moved on to the Chicago area for the opening of the Arlington Park meeting on June 19 Yet the Widener trio mentioned above are eligible and along with them such as Di ¬ rector J E Bel Reigh Appleknocker Sky tracer Stir Up Olympic Zenith Rodney Stone Boy Knight By Jimminy and last ¬ ly but still of great interest Royal Prince the Marylandbred son of Dauber who per ¬ formed splendidly in the fall of last year The Brooklyn Handicap will bring the Aqueduct meeting to a close on Saturday July 1 For threeyearolds and older horses it is rich in quality if not in quan ¬ tity Among the eligibles are the Ernst pair of Alquest and Aletern AleternThe The ArlingtonWashington meet ¬ ings will open two weeks from Mon ¬ day and the eligibility lists speak eloquently for the fine entries made for the Classic Futurity Lassie American Derby Washington Park Futurity and the Princess Pat Stakes These two tracks are liberal contributors to the 50000 events there being no less than five with this kings ransom as the magnet The first of these will be the Stars and Stripes Handicap to be run on July 4 and that will be followed by the Arlington Classic on July 22 the Arlington Handicap July 29 the American Derby August 26 and the Washington Handicap on September 4 To list only these five events how ever would not do full justice to these Chicago meetings which are outstanding for their splendid stakes program The Arlington Futurity both have 25000 in added money and such races as the Beverly Hand leap Arlington Lassie Stakes and Princess Pat Stakes range anywhere from 15000 to 2 5000 added
