Carrolls silks to a game victory today in the featured La-! fayette Purse at Suffolk Downs. Hard ridden through the stretch by apprentice Pat Patterson. Winsome Lad reached the finish of the six furlongs a head before H. G. Bedwells Hammer-Lock, who was a length in advance of Joseph Tuccis favored Nowadays, third in the field of seven. The race was marred somewhat when Hammer-Lock, ridden by Al Shelhamer. drifted in during the closing drive and impeded Nowadays to such extent that the choice had to be taken up sharply by Rocco Sisto and sent to the outside to find racing room. Winsome Lad. who was fortunate in avoiding any interference during the stretch, closed gamely enough to whip Hammer-lock by a short margin. A crowd of 13.076 patrons witnessed the sport at the course and the program was decided under anything but ideal weather I conditions. Showers during the early part j of the afternoon left the strip in a sloppy condition. The major portion of the assemblage was stunned at the defeat of Nowadays, generally rated one of the best three-year-olds in this area. Overlooked somewhat in the speculation.
