—_ • EDDIE ARC ARO— Starred in the saddle yesterday at Belmont Park with three winners. Hampden Works Full Belmont Route Runs Mile and Half In 2:35!/5/ Handily Assault Breezes Half Mile In :52; Ten Likely to Seek 00,000 Race on Week-End BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y.. May 28. — Four leading candidates for Saturdays seventy-eighth running of the 00,000 Belmont Stakes at a mile and one-half were given private trials at Belmont Park this morning. King Ranchs Assault, winner of the Wood Memorial, Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and current king of the three-year-olds, was only breezed a half mile in :52 over the sloppy main Belmont strip this morning, but is coming up to the third and last of the "Triple Crown" events in fine fettle. Two outstanding candidates for the Belmont were sent the full distance of the classic this morning, Foxcatcher Farms Hampden and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Natchez being timed in 2:355 and 2:39%, respectively. Hampden was accompanied in his trial by Mrs. Jeffords Mahout, who astonished Belmont fans on Saturday when he beat Lord Boswell and others in the Peter Pan Handicap. Mahout only went a mile and a quarter, which he did in 2 : 09, merely breezing. The Foxcatcher and Jeffords colts worked as a team for 10 furlongs, when Mahout was eased and Hampden went on for another quarter, which he did in the good time of :26Y5. Veteran dockers could not recall seeing horses owned by different interests and pointing for the same stake, work together. Misleader on Doubtful List There are now 10 probable starters for the Belmont, with another on the doubtful list. The probables in order of likely favoritism are Assault, Lord Boswell, Hampden, Mahout, Mist o Gold, Manor Lad, Natchez, Alamond, Cable and War Watch, while Wheatley Stables Misleader may also go postward. Assult has been a comparative outsider in all of his victories this year, and while he will probably be the choice on Saturday, he may again be a liberal price, as there are many who believe that Lord Boswell will be able to catch the son of Bold Venture at a mile and a half. Lord Boswell was catching Assult at the end of the Preakness, and was a flying second in the Peter Pan. Hampden will also receive support on the strength of his creditable performances in the Derby and Preakness, in both of which he was a fast finishing third. [ | | [
