Citation Romps in Preakness Lincoln Fields Meet Opens Washington Park Scene of Session SessionField Field of Twenty Headed by Fighting Frank Delegate Entered in Crete Handicap HandicapWASHINGTON WASHINGTON PARK Homewood 111 May 15 The Lincoln Fields Racing Asso ¬ ciation bypassing Hawtorne for the first time since World War U forced it to oper ¬ ate from its Crete home grounds picks up the thoroughbred banner where Sports ¬ mans Park left off and Monday will begin a 30day session at this extremely popular and spacious course As one of the main spokes on the major Illinos wheel Lincoln is girding for extensive highclass racing and hopes to be greeted by a crowd ex ceeding 15000 providing the fickle weather of recent weeks decides to relent relentThe The major surprise development this morning came with the closing of entries for the twentyfirst running of the 10000 Crete Handicap in which no less than 20 of the 21 eligibles for the race were named Regardless of track conditions it is quite likely that from 14 to 15 will go postward and the manner in which the field is weighted bids fair to bring it down to the line closely bunched bunchedPresently Presently the Woolford Farms sprinting champion of the Florida season Delegate holds the honor role of favorite The stylish chestnut gelding must handle cotop weight along with Mrs Louise S Donovans Fighting Frank of 121 pounds and he will have the wellknown Chicago veteran A Tony Skoronski in the stirrup irons Originally it was not the intention of trainer Johnny Nerud to run Delegate after his gruelling Florida grind during which time he competed in eight stakes races But Delegate began to kick up a rum ¬ pus for want of activity while he was being rested and recently his workouts show that he retails all of his speed He was forced to handle imposing posts in Florida and the general opinion is that his assignment isnt beyond his reach reachOthers Others in Feature FeatureOthers Others in second Deter ¬ mining what the weather or track condi ¬ tions will be at this time could not be re ¬ garded as more than a poor guess This morning the racing strip was muddy and there were intermittent showers Shortly after the workout period the sun peeped through the skies and a brisk wind blew across the racing surface with splendid drying qualities qualitiesNot Not only is Washington Park a new tem ¬ porary site for Lincoln Fields but this will be the first time in the long history of the Crete organization that Col Matt J Winn is not at the helm Edward J Fleming a Chicago coal merchant and a longstanding associate of Winn heads a group which purchased the Lincoln Fields property last year yearFleming Fleming however this year has been tremendously active in the preliminary plans for the meeting Several months ago he appointed Peter J ODonnell former local newspaperman as general manager Dee Sumpter who had charge of the stab ¬ ling allotments is another important figure in the new setup Fleming hopes to have the Lincoln Fields property at Crete ready for operation next year Ordinarily the bulky field of the Crete would cause patron to tread lightly in the selection of a probable winner but most of the key horses in the field are possessed of excellent early speed a factor that should stand them in good stead if any jamming occurs Delegate and Fighting Frank oddly enough drew numbers one and two post positions respectively and it is likely that they will wage a torrid fight for the early lead leadAt At his best Fighting Frank is one of the fastestbreaking horses in the country He has been idle since last October when he upset calculations by beating the sensa ¬ tionallyfast Spy Song His 1947 campaign however didnt amount to much but in 1946 he was a sprinter capable of matching strides with the best bestThe The veteran conditioner Bob McGaryey has expressed his confidence in the filly Tre Vit who comes off what probably is the top race of her victorious career At Churchill Downs last Saturday she cap ¬ tured the Equipose Handicap and strung out in back of her were the good per ¬ formers Colosal Trixie and others
