JUDGES STAND 1 = Bf Charles Hatton 1 1Ky Ky Colonel Leading Joliet Candidate Lindheimer Directs Arlington Program Headley Outlines Beaumont Farm Plans Calumet Hope for Juvenile Filly Races RacesLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky May 19 19President President Ed Fleming and general manager Pete ODonnell are pleased With this much of LincolnatWashington and on the first Saturday they hope to show Chicagoans some of the better male twoyearolds in the 10000 Joliet Stakes of five furlongs The Bashford Manor winner Ky Colonel is a prospect for this affair in which he may again encounter Fred Hoopers stretchrunner Olympia By the way the start of fivefurlong events is quite near the turn on Washington Parks mile and a furlong course but there is a homestretch of 1512 feet It was never any place for fainthearted horses Many of the most promising 1948 twoyearolds have yet to appear but usually it takes a decent sort to win a Joliet as Alsab Littletown and Preoccupy were in past seasons It may interest Chicagoans that Ky Colonel is a halfbrother of their old favorite Jacks Jill heroine of the Hawthorne Gold Cup and other events They are out of the blind bargain mare Ministrelette who was this spring bred to Alsab LincolnatWashington has attracted many important strings and the success of the meeting seems to depend a great deal upon the weather Sportsmans attend ¬ ances held up well considering the disagreeable weather Estimates place the decrease in play here at 12 per cent Memorial Day is of course Lincolns best date and it will be celebrated this season with the 25000 Peabody Memorial for threeyearolds s sBen Ben F Lindheimer is due in Chicago and stakes blanks for Arlingtons Equipoise Mile Princess Doreen and Hyde Park have made their appearance Judging from response to the early closing events at Arlington the Calumet Headley and Dixiana strings will be represented there Jaclyns 45000 Spotted Bull costliest 1947 yearling is in the Futurity With Pleasure afforded Chicago turf goers maiiy thrills last summer and Oscar Breault is expected to return him from the West Coast for racing in his home town this season seasonHal Hal Price Headley is commuting between his Beaumont Farm here and Belmont Park where trainer Leigh Cotton is racing his string headed by the clever twoyearold filly Acoma winner of the Debutante at the Downs She is in the National Stallion on June 5 and we plan to start her if she is all right Headley observed adding that she had a bit of heat in her shins after the Louisville race Acoma is also in the Lassie and Princess Pat She is one of the kindest fillies I have had in some time and we hope to keep her that way and not get her stirred up in training for she might be a threeyearold prospect Headley is giving the robust Revoked and the racy Sir Damion an excel ¬ lent chance in the stud at Beaumont Askmenow has a filly foal by Sir Damion and has been returned to the son of Sir Gallahad IH and Athenia is in foal to Revoked Her dam Salaminia also is going to the son of Blue Larkspur I am breeding the big mares to Sir Damion and the little ones to Revoked Headley remarked The simple logic of this is really quite refreshing in an area where so many seem obsessed with reviving some latent quality in the fifth or sixth remove of a pedigree Calumets twoyearolds have some rich relatives and it will be remarkable if there arent several runners in the group The colt Good Ending is certain to be the observed of all observers whan he appears as a son of Bull Lea and the last foal of Whirlaways dam Dust whirl He gained some experience riding trains when he accompanied Citation on his junket to Kentucky A filly that Ben Jones fancies is called WhirlABit and she is by Whirlaway out of Hug Again In case it has escaped you Hug Again is the dam of Sun Again and of Fejvent who set the three year old mile and a quarter record at 200 in last summers rich American Derby Fervent is the smallest good horse we know about but he is all heart and no peel Hug Again is a mare that Warren Wright bought twice before retiring her to Calumet where you may be quite sure she will remain Her bay Bull Lea filly is Paul Ebelhardts idea of one of the nicest foals on the farm this spring springTurf Turf ana Tflford Wilson is a small breeder but to his credit are two of the better colts in the East and West in Admiral Lea and Irish Sun respectively He is tempted to retain Irish Suns yearling halfsister by Unbreakable to replace her aging dam at stud Que Gato died foaling Admiral Lea who is not unlike Mrs Rices filly Mystery Lady in that he was reared by a nurs mare Coldstream how has two gray nurse mares and Charley Kenney has in mind developing a Roi Percheron family George Widener is another racing man who thinks it would be a mistake to abandon twoyearold racing until midseason The late Jack Keenes original originalI I plans called for an auto ramp directly into the clubhouse box section not unlike the Union terminal The clubhouse park ¬ ing lot is where the sevenfurlong chute was supposed to be Calumet will retain 27 yearlings after its Keeneland consign ment is sold The French stakes winner Solina traces to a mare by the American Hermis The Little Red Horse who was exported and finally served in Belgium A Whitney Farm filly foal is the last of the St Germans
