Boots and Saddle To Porters Broom BroomPrevails Prevails in FrontRunning Fashion Over Roi Rouge as 26511 See Detroit Opener OpenerFAIR FAIR GROUNDS Detroit Mich May 22 Porters Broom racing for Ray Anken bauer of Chicago and Versailles Ky was in his best form today as he defeated eight worthy rivals handily to score in front funning style in the Boots and Saddle Handicap that topped the openingday program here The winner ridden by Jimmy Duff a graduate of the Detroit jockey school of last year took command 6f the o situation soon after the start opened up a long lead through the stretch and was not fully extended as he crossed the finish line nearly two lengths before Louis J Hollenbachs lastfinishing Roi Rouge Third went to D C Wilhelms Bubbling Easy who raced in that position most of the sixfurlong trip but who was unable to make any serious inroads into the advantage held by the first two twoPorters Porters Broom was scoring his third consecutive victory following two tallies in Kentucky previous to his arrival here He was stoutly supported and returned 740 as he was timed in an excellent 110 110Ariel Ariel Ace Gives Way It was Ariel Ace who attempted to run with Porters Broom in the early racing but this effort took its toll and when Por ¬ ters Broom drew away in the stretch it marked the end of the bid of Ariel Ace Meanwhile Roi Rouge had been far back in the early racing but on the turn he began to pick up the field in a swinging bid on the outside Through the home lane Roi Rouge continued to dislodge the contenders by his fast late effort but Por ¬ ters Broom had something left to thwart the challenge as Duff did not have to pun ¬ ish his charge chargeRacing Racing returned to this Motor City course under near ideal weather conditions to mark the first opening in several years to enjoy such weather While a mild breeze fanned the course overhead conditions were clear and a crowd of 26511 thronged the course courseSun Sun Herod the sixyearold Sun Teddy gelding who was acquired by the Detroit partnership of Grissom Sherman from the Brookmeade Stable during the Miami MiamiContinued Continued on Page Three Porters Broom Takes Feature At Detroit as 26511 Look On OnContinued Continued from Page One Oneseason season followed up a score in Kentuckys Luke McLuke Handicap recently by regis ¬ tering a convincing threequarter length victory in the Man o War Handicap that divided the spotlight on the card with the featured Boots and Saddle The winner ridden by George Monson was well rated closest to the pace of Jobstown until near ing the far turn where he swept to the front readily on the inside This took noth ¬ ing from Sun Herod who had something in reserve to meet the expected bid from Leo Caillouettes Joes Choice who enjoyed slight favoritism in the wagering wageringJoes Joes Choice had been well conserved close to the leaders and he swept around the outside on the stretch turn to make his bid Responding to hard urging from Fred Pannell Joes Choice moved to the flank of Sun Herod but his efforts to further di ¬ minish the advantage of the leader proved futile as Monson did not find it necessary to apply punishment to make the issue safe v vCharles Charles Pennock a 19yearold lad from Camden N J was astride the first win ¬ ner of his career when he brought home S J Browns Mr X in the first race in which novice riders guided the entrants Pennock brought his charge around the outside of the leaders on the final turn and had him up in a whipless drive to oust the favorite Menotnow from the van position in the final few yards Third went to Aguilucho in a tight fit over the early pace ¬ maker Midhy MidhyA A disqualification came out of the run ¬ ning of the second race when Western Front who finished third was placed fourth and Miss Texas a field horse was moved into third place The winner turned up in Midget Store also in the field while second went to Red Horizon
