BETWEEN RACES I By Oscor Otis Progress Noted at Delaware Park Better Transportation for Public Vantage Point on Training Track Free and Rapid Laundry Service ServiceSTANTON STANTON Del May 22 Horsemen and public will find a greatly improved Dela ¬ ware Park when racing opens at the popular Stanton course next Saturday for its eleventh year of opera ¬ tion Delaware Park of course is the justly fa ¬ mous nonprofit course on the banks of Mill Creek in the vicinity of Stanton Progress at Delaware has been along three general lines to the public to the horsemen and to le grooms Jtor tne puoiic improvea trans ¬ portation and parking facilities will be offered the horsemen have a new five furlong training track over which to work their charges during morning hours and the grooms are getting ever closer to what might be termed a stable area millenium The Delaware folks with Bryan Field as their general manager are well aware that Delaware is in a keenly competitive racing field and in point of time theyve made it about as easy to get to by train from 30th Street Station in Philadelphia as it would be to motor over to Garden State Park But Delaware is a progressive track regardless of the competitive aspects of JerseyDela ¬ wareMaryland racing Messrs Field Don ¬ ald P Ross president and Clark Pardee track superintendent and engineer have constructed a new taxibus terminal near the main gate and set up a traffic system whereby the busses do not merge or inter ¬ fere with cars either entering or leaving the main parking area areaA A A A AMuch Much favorable comment already has been made on Delawares new fivefurlong training track the fifth on the property But what might be deemed news is the fact that said training track is embellished by two infield lakes which serve a dual pur ¬ pose as a reserve reservoir of 2000000 gal ¬ lons of water for the high pressure water tank which has reduced the fire hazard at Delaware Park to near the zero point and as beautifying spots on the landscape and a homing place for wild fowl It is by all odds the most beautiful training area we have ever seen The lakes are powered by huge pumps and their source of water is the aforementioned Mill Creek But Field and his associates did not stop there They went to the added trouble of macadamizing a high area or miniature plateau just be ¬ yond the finish pole to establish it as a vantage point lor trainers during periods of summer showers The trainer can drive from barn to said area park up against the rail time his horses from a height which affords as good a view as the average grandstand or clubhouse box then drive back to the barn in comfort The area can accommodate about 200 cars carsI I A The grooms who are hefeTn abundance now that Maryland racing is taking a breather invariably show up asking if the new swimming pool in the stable area has been built The answer is it hasnt been as yet but no doubt will be by the time the next racing season rolls around Lack of time only precluded its construction But even if the pool is not as yet available there is another item that Delaware Park is offering this year that should make a hit with all hands This is free and rapid laun ¬ dry service Anyone officially in the stable area proem exercise boy or trainer can take his laundry to the service point and have it back in two days with the compli ¬ ments of the management At the end of the meeting if a stable ships and there is still laundry outstanding the management will forward it with no cost A mail box has been installed with two outgoings each day to either Stanton or Wilmington Post offices Lee Rolland has been appointed postmaster is registering the stable address of all hands and if they dont call for their mail well theyll deliver it on the double The postman making the rounds of a barn area is something of a novel and we rather imagine most welcome service serviceA A A A AAs As for the racing a new record number of noes was said by the management for applications for stable space It was neces ¬ sary to say no to some 2000 horses simply because there was no place to put them While the stakes and purse program will pretty well parallel that of last year there have been a few noteworthy changes One is the conversion of the Diamond State Stakes to the Leonard Richards named in honor of the last first chairman of the Delaware Racing commission Another is the inaugural running of the National Maiden Hurdle in corelation with such races at Belmont and Saratoga The third is the carding of a second series of distance races to supplement the Montchanin The new series is to be known as the Kiamensi and is named after a tribe of ancient Indians who originally roamed the nearby woods It is noteworthy too that the Dela ¬ ware Oaks and the Leonard Richards this year call for 17500 in added money Jt is the policy of the management to increase these two stakes 2500 each year for an in ¬ definite period
