JUDGES STAND I = By Charles Hatton I ICCA CCA Oaks of Interest in Midwest Mahmouds Win Four Stakes in One Day Asbury Offers Another Gala Belle Colt Dielle Is Prospect for Miss America AmericaLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky May 31 31The The traditional Coaching Club American Oaks which is a sort of Fillies Belmont is to have its 31st renewal on Wednes ¬ day and one finds much interest in it here as well as in the East The C C A Oaks is a stake the sportsmen and breeders particularly like to win and some of the field are expected to appear later in filly stakes at fashionable Arlington Park Apart from the more tangible proceeds such as a silver sup and 50000 added purse the owner of a C C A Oaks winner is justified in feeling that he has a first rate prospect for the stud In the past this Oaks has been won by such as Cleopatra Flambette Prin ¬ cess Doreen Florence Nightingale Edith Cavel Top Flight Black Helen Vagrancy and Twilight Tear Cleopatra foaled Pom and Phalanx Black Helen is the grandam of But Why Not and Vagrancy is the dam of Black Tarquin We do not suppose the C C A Oaks is infallible of course but stakes winners produce the highest percentage of stakes winners For various reasons sequences of three or four such mares in a pedigree are rare and mark the beginning of a family There is a cult which blames ttie lapses on classinthedam but that is perfectly absurd If it were the case breeders should be plowing under Oaks winners rather than trying to developthem Most people seem prepared to accept Citation as the threeyearold champion but no filly has established her superiority to the others of her sex at all clearly up to now WatermillT White Lady Whirl Some and Al foxie are likely starters The Oaks affords Scattered a chance of emphasizing her claims claimsMahmoud Mahmoud must have set a sire record of some sort when four of his get won stakes events onSaturday and another was placed in a stake C V Whitneys Vulcans Forge won the Withers and his Quarter Pole the Constitution G D Wideners Marabout won the Juvenile and Norman Churchs 65000 Speculation the Will Rogers Handicap while J M Roeblings Macbeth was runnerup in the Jersey Stakes As we write this Mahmoud has four stakes winning threeyearolds of 1948 to his credit with R W McIIvairis Billings awaiting the bugle for Lincoln Fields at Washingtons JPeabody Memorial MemorialThis This tourist motored to Dr Eslie Asburys Forest Retreat in the hilly country north of Paris last weekend and there saw another likeable filly by Count Fleet This is a bay yearling out of Dead Reckoning who is the dam of Director J E She is one of eight Forest Retreat yearlings The others are a bay colt by War Admiral Gala Belle br c by Blue Larkspur Ever Dear b c by Questionnaire Five All b c by Equifox Blue Skim ¬ mer b f by Blenheim IT Never Change gr f by Mahmoud Evening Shadow and a brown filly by Heliopolis Benevolence The Cincinnatian sells his colts and keeps an occasional filly for racing and the stud There has been some little indecision about the fillies this year All are good and Asbury has until midnight to decide The Gala Belle is perhaps best of the colts and indeed A S Hewitt fancies he may top the sale He has morescope than most War Admirals and is a different type from his halfbrothers Revoked and Speculation The Forest Retreat colts and fillies are well grown and their condition suggests that Charley Alsop will have them quite as sleek and eyefilling as the group that assayed so highly at Keeneland last summer summerForest Forest Retreat has 10 foals this spring and nine of these are colts which is an enviable score The lone filly is a dark chestnut by Menow Breakfast Call The colts are a brown by Bull Lea Mirrored ch by Mahmoud Benevolence b by War Admiral Blue raced Gain Belle a roomy Sir Gallahad IDT mare out of Bel Toro who had some earlier foals that were jaundiced Asbury recalls Gala Belle was beaten an inch in the Old Colony with a lot of colts behind her then beat all the Selima fillies in a prep race but ironically was not herself an eligible for the stake Jean Bowman incidentally has painted an excellent likeness of Forest Retreats foundation dam along with a chestnut filly foal who has since turned out to be Dielle This youngster may be a Miss America starter at Lincoln atWashingtonTurf atWashington Turf ana Pavot suggested the mating of War Admiral and tlu Case Ace mare Carillon which produced the swift Blue Peter George Ford Morris has done an oil of Risk for A B Hancock Double Jays dam Broomshot has been bred to Halcyon which is
