REFLECTIONS 1 By Nelson Dunstan Three YearOlds Again Take Spotlight Kent Should Draw GoodSized Field Suburban Jinx Race for Champ Stymie Top Flight May Be Belmonts Best Race RaceNEW NEW YORK N Y June 2 2Threeyearolds Threeyearolds will come back into the picture for the next two weekends The Peter Pan Handicap and the Yankee Hand ¬ icap are Saturdays features at BelmontPark and Suffolk Downs respectively and on the following weekend or June 12 the Belmont Stakes will be staged while down in Delaware the Kent will be to feature event of the day Both the Peter Pan and Yankee should prove fine contests for neither Citation nor Coaltpwn will be in the post parades Citation is a certainty in the Belmont Stakes and al ¬ though he is a doubtful starter Coaltown is now an eligible for the Kent Even should Coaltown be sent to Wilmington it is doubt ¬ ful if his presence will make much differ ¬ ence in the size of the field For now that le has been beaten by Vulcans Forge in the Withers at one mile there are quite a few owners around who would send their colorbearer against him in a race at one and onesixteenth miles No less than 90 threeyearolds were nominated for the Kent and as Citation will probably cause a small field in the Belmont we imagine quite a few members of the division will go down to Wilmington Among those named for the Kent are Escadru Kilroy Star Bout Salmagundi Better Self Bovard Macbeth Gasparilla Loser Weeper Mount Marcy Quarter Pole and Vulcans Forge winner of the Withers WithersThere There are many jinx events for both jockeys and horses in racing Although he won three runnings of the Kentucky Derby Earl Sande never won a renewal of the Futurity Steve Donoghue made the Epsom Derby a step ¬ ping stone to fame but Gordon Richards the man who has ridden more winners than any other jockey in the world has never been able to win the great threeyear old race at Epsom When it comes to horses the Sub ¬ urban is Stymies jinx for he has now started in four renewals but has been unable to win one Last Saturday the filly Harmonica beat him in the type of race which he dislikes most and that is one with a slow early pace But in running second the worlds moneywinning cham ¬ pion increased his earnings by 10000 bringing his total to 859635 The older horses have no important events to shoot at before the meeting comes to a close on June 14 but in later meetings the Jacobs horse will again be try ¬ ing for the difference between his present earnings and the 1000000 mark Hirsch Jacobs does not like any reference to the 1000000 as he feels that it puts a jinx on Stymie But even so the New York public is pulling hard for his horse to be the first to reach that figure figureFrom From a competitive standpoint the 20000 Top Flight Hand ¬ icap at Belmont Park on June 9 shapes up as one of the best races to date this season At a mile and a sixteenth this event which is for fillies and mares threeyearolds and older has drawn the best list of eligibles among the weaker sex of this country Harmonica the Suburban winner and Honeymoon who scored a surprise victory over Elpis in the Vineland are both likely starters And so too is Gallorette the hardhitting Brann mare who was withdrawn from the Suburban The list by no means ends there for among the other eligibles areEar shot Miss Kimo But Why Not Snow Goose First Flight Riso later Carolyn A and still others The imported mare Impru ¬ dence who won the Epsom Oaks last year is also named and should they elect to send her in this event they will be picking just about the toughest company among fillies and mares to be found in this country The weights will be released on Friday of this week and it will be mighty interesting to see how John B Campbell rates them in what shapes up on paper as one of the best races of the spring season seasonThe The twoyearold division has advanced very slowly Bad weather coughing and bucked shins has retarded quite a few of the youngsters in these early days of the season August and September are the big months for the juveniles but now that the Juvenile in New York and the Polly Drummond Stakes at Delaware have been con ¬ tested there will be quite a few races for colts and fillies during June At Belmont on the weekend the National Stallion filly division will be run while down in Dela ¬ ware the Christiana Stakes which is for twoyearold colts and geldings will be the feature event of the day On the following weekend the colt division of the National Stallion willbe a secondary feature to the Bel ¬ mont Stakes while the Lincoln Fields meeting will offer the first running of the Miss America Stakes for two yearold fillies The Arlington Park meeting will open on June 21 and on that day they will feature the 20000 Hyde Park Stakes a twoyearold race at five and a half furlongs While it is the intention of the Calumet contin ¬ gent to start Flying Disc a chestnut colt by Sun Again Lady Peace in the colt division of the National Stallion they plan to have quite a few of their juveniles ready for the Arlington meeting Last year they won the Hyde Park Stakes with Bewitch BewitchSixtyseven Sixtyseven years have passed since the Americanbred Iro quois won the Epsom Derby so American interest will focus on William Woodwards entry of Black Tarquin and The Senator II in Saturdays renewal According to Capt BoydRochf ort Black Tarquin appears to have a better chance of victory than his stablemate but since Ten Senator H who is by Isolator out of Maraschino by Sir Gallahad ITJ won the Hyperion Stakes recently he has gained a large group of followers From the other side comes word that My Babu will go to the post as favorite but there are quite a few Englishmen who will be back ¬ ing The Cobbler the winner of the Coventry Stakes at Ascot and the National Breeders Produce Stakes at Sandown This colt is by Windsor Slipper out of Overture by Dastur and in his female line traces back through Arabella to that famous mare Pretty Polly There has been a rumor that the winner of the Epson Derby may be brought to this country to meet our own Citation in a match race It is only a rumor however and we doubt very much if such a match will ever be brought about Winning the Derby would be glory enough for William Wood ¬ ward and we doubt if Warren Wright would take kindly to a match race so soon after the ArmedAssault match at Belmont a year ago
