JUDGES STAND By Charles Hatton Real Delight Points for Coaching Club Rate Spartan Valor Good Not Yet Great Rose Jet May Debut in Betsy Ross Saturday One Count Dark Horse in Rich Preakness PreaknessPIMLICO PIMLICO Baltimore Md May 12 12Racing Racing men here still were going on enthusiastically today about Real Delights sparkling performance in the BlackEyed Susan She won the race but has yet to really run in it For she simply breezed on the lead all the way turning what was supposed to be a horse race into an exhibition Trainer Ben Jones will leave her here several days after which he ships the outsize daughter of Bull Lea to Belmont Park where she will attempt to complete the Fillies Triple Crown by add ¬ ing the Coaching Club Oaks to her successes in the local stake and the Kentucky Oaks Real Delight looked far more impressive against the Eastern fillies than she had in the Downs Oaks in which the Calumet castoff Whirla Lea straightened her out a bit down near the finish The form suggests that the Midwestern fillies are classier than those developed thus far in the East Mrs Grahams brilliant Rose Jet could alter this estimate though there is some question if the brown daughter of Jet Pilot can be quite up to the CCA Oaks route in time Eddie Arcaro has a high opinion of Mrs Wrights filly dismounting to say She is a bear She could have beaten 150 Asked how she would measure up using Twilight Tear as a yardstick Arcaro said That is like comparing memories But this is a very kind filly and always responds willingly With Hill Gail on the sidelines for many unforeseeable weeks to come Real Delight is the big horse of the Calumets deploying this side of the Rockies Jones has indicated he could wish she were in ihe Preakness A splint kept her on the shelf last season and Bhe still has the rheumatiz so that she walks rather like a duck but her long stride had everybody driving back of her after a ha f in the BlackEyed Susan Arid Janon Fisher observed It just shows you that if they have class they can overcome a lot of things that stop ordinary horses So long as Real Delight taids her present formit will take something more than just A Qice filly to whip her herAt At some risk of being charged with flagrant lesc majeste and irresponsible debunking this corner is con ¬ strained to agree with Pimlicos handicapper McLennan that Spartan Valor is a very brilliant hprse probably the best there is right now But great is something else I am not yet prepared to go along with this appraisal McLennan expressed his respect for Spartan Valor when he assigned the son of Attention 132 pounds in the Dixie He did not accept but the handicapper observes He does not like his races very close together and seems to prefer them at least two weeks apart Its was this more than the weight that kept him out of the Dixie Young Bill Helis fouryearold runs like a fresh horse always on the pace and apparently runs best when he is fresh He is said not to ship very comfortably but it may be that Chicagoans will see him at Arlington this summer With all due credit to the flower of the Garden State it does seem to us that the appellation great is being cheapened by the promiscuity with which it is bandied about in the present day At the same time we think it would be nice were Spartan Valor to prove truly great like his grand sire Equipoise for it would help racing generally and New Jersey breeding in particular By the way Henry Knight will offer a yearling sister to Spartan Valor at the Spa this summer and if she has the regulation number of legs this filly is bound to excite fabulous bidding biddingTom Tom Fool champion of the 1951 twoyearolds will be an absentee when the Preakness is decided on Saturday but there k possibility that Rose Jet last years filly leader will make her threeyearold debut on that date She is a prospect for the 20000 Betsy Ross of six furlongs for those of her age and sex at Garden State Park Rose Jet is sound and has escaped the cough which has shelved Tom Fool and many others on Long Island this spring but she did not grow very much during the winter Her developer William Booth now is at liberty sa they say Booth is recognized as one of the most ex ¬ perienced and proficient of contemporary trainers He began in 1905 at Gravesend as an exercise boy for Charles E Boots Darnell a wonderful horseman and a good teacher Booth rode for a year on the flat eight years throughthefield before he became a trainer Among his mounts was Rapid Water He has trained for Redstone Stable John Macomber Emil Dene mark the late William Helis and Mrs Graham Booth brought smt such as Gladiator Sporting Blood PeteeWrack Elpis and Cosmic Bomb He finds it difficult to name the best horse he has trained but always has been fond of Gladiator GladiatorTurf Turf ana Market breeders are glad for Calumets sister act of Real Delight and Bubbley Many yearlings sell for fanciful sums on the premise that hi bloodstock breed ¬ ing lightning can strike twice in the same place One of the outriders mounts at Pimlico is a former polo pony of 23 years Still can catch most thoroughbreds go ¬ ing a quarter mile Delaware track superintendent Clarke Pardee has a maintenance personnel of 99 A scratch this summer is Uncle Billy Stewart retiring at 82 Alfred Vanderbilts weight carrier Discovery still is very potent at 21 Wise Scholar is estimated by most observers to be the most two year old of either sex seen in Maryland up to now this season She has attracted much attention to the youthful sire High Lea Balti moreans regard Pimlico racing as an institution and hope it is permanent Mrs Walter Jeffords One Count one of the improving Count Fleets is rapidly becoming the dark horse of the Preakness locally Marylands half ers have requested the milers announce then dates earlier The milers in turn might wish Jersey dates also were al ¬ located sooner Bowie is cultivating Washington patronage One of the film patrol cameras here is situated in the ancient cupola atop the old clubhouse Ideal for headon views of the stretch runs Pimlicos play is up about 17 per cent in comparison with cor ¬ responding days in 51 Wally Dunn who trained him fancies Mafosta will add to his reputation at stud if only he is given some worthwhile mares He is training a smart twoyearold daughter of the Celt for Mrs Guiber Son in Mi Amante a winner in Kentucky Real De ¬ light was among Calumets original 11 Preakness candidates was dropped from the list after the second nomination fee
