John D Schapiro Bound far Europe on Turf Tour TourPresident President of Laurel Will Discuss International Racing During Visit VisitNEW NEW YORK N Y May 5 John D Schapiro president of Laurel Race Course and originator of the worldfamous Wash ¬ ington D C International turf race run at the Maryland track each fall left New York today on the French Lines He de France for a sixweek stay in Europe He is being accompanied by Mrs Schapiro SchapiroDuring During his trip Schapiro will tour Italy France and England where he will visit the leading courses and discuss interna ¬ tional racing with owners breeders train ¬ ers and officials of each nation nationWhile While in England he will witness the running of the English Derby on June 2 he Coronation Cup on June 3 and the English Oaks on June 4 All of these prom ¬ inent English stakes are held at Epsom Downs The Cerby and the Oaks are two of the five British classics for threeyear olds and the Coronation Cup won last year by Zucchero is regarded as one of the top five races in England for older horses horsesSince Since these three events consistently bring out the best of their age and sex in training the Epsom Derby beiiig re ¬ garded as the most coveted race in Eu ¬ rope the money horses in these events automatically become possibilities for invi ¬ tations to the third Washington D C International to be held during the Laurel I fall meet October 16 through November 3 3Sir Sir Percy Loraines Darius became the first outstanding English candidate for an x invitation to Laurels great race next fall i when he won the Two Thousand Guineas the first of Englands Triple Crown races last week at Newmarket The other Triple Crown events are the Derby and the St Leger run at Doncaster in September Darius is trained at Newmarket by the former English jockey Harry Wragg He was ridden by Manny Mercer who has appeared at Laurel astride Wilwyn in both i previous runnings of the International InternationalIn In France most of the better races for r threeyearolds are still to be run but in a Ferriol owned by the Comte de Chambure and second to Darius in the Two Thousand Guineas that country has a solid candi ¬ date for the Laurel classic Marcel Bous sacs Cordova Baron Guy de Rothschilds Le Geographe and the Aga Khans Beigler Bey are the other highranking three yearolds in France FranceWhile While in Italy Schapiro will witness an ¬ other derby this time the Italian version at the Campanelle race course in Rome The two leading threeyearolds in that country are Orvieto and Botticelli Both have won this spring but they have never met each other and Italian turfmen are eagerly looking forward to their first meet ¬ ing in the Italian Derby in midMay At the moment these are the two horses who could provide the best Italian representa ¬ tion in the Washington D C Inter ¬ national
