By CHARLES HATTON BALTIMORE Md May 5 Turf goers thoughts are turning to the Preakness here at nostalgic Pimlico on May 22 and Marylands second of the Triple Crown events could have one of its most interesting renewals Determine is not to be a starter hav ¬ ing returned to California Some may be disappointed at this but one re ¬ flects that the Derby was no less important for the ab ¬ sence of Turnto and Porterhouse And it is possible Mrs Person and Charley Whittingham will decide to start Porterhouse in the Preaknesss though the Belmont Stakes is his principal objective The Preakness may af ¬ ford Correlation an opportunity of amending his failure in the Kentucky Derby His most distinguishing perform ¬ ances were given over sandy eastern surfaces in the Flor ¬ ida Derby at Gulfstream and the Wood Memorial at Jamaica Very probably we think he will fancy the Pim ¬ lico surface more than he did the Downs As this is writ ¬ ten we are not prepared to say if Hasty Road will be a Preakness starter He has never seemed to untfack him ¬ self on eastern courses as he ios those in the Midlands though the absence of Determine from the Preakness and the shorter route and stretch here are encouraging A colt of brilliant speed Hasty Road is an exciting per ¬ former winning or losing Equipped with blinkers he cer ¬ tainly enlivened the Derby and the Trial Goyamo is an ¬ other prospect for the Hilltop classic He seems not to be the most cheerful runner in training and takes nicely timed riding but at Pimlico he would be performing on a surface more like the Blue Grass Stakes going than that at Louisville There is also his kinsman Artismo who is mentioned as a Preakness possibility We know turfmen who imagine that in the end the Hopeful winner will assert himself as the leader of the division Marylariders Interest Mounting in 100000 Preakness Correlation May Prefer Going to Downs Dixie Renewal Highlights WeekEnd Sport Pimlico Meet Marks Social Season in Md will be afforded a rooting interest in this years Preakness in which hopes for a state victory are carried by Mrs Harry Parrs Staffordshire From this distance it appears an open race and one that will be Dixie and the 20000 added BlackEyed Susan on the following week end seem assured top class fields There are 32 nominees for the Dixie which is at nine furlongs including Royal Vale Find Cold Command Straight Face and Mister Black This Mister Black ran like a worthwhile proposition for the seasons handicaps back at Keeneland And it may be the Reubens wiU de ¬ cide to send him on for the Dixie Queen Hopeful for the BlackEyed Susan and Hasty Road for the Preakness This formidable establishment has been second in about 135000 worth of stakes in Kentucky the last several weeks One hears that Royal Vale is in resplendent con ¬ dition in New York where last spring he made Tom Fool run phenomenal races to beat him for the Metropolitan and Suburban He won the Dixie in smashing style a year ago The BlackEyed Susan suffered from a conflict with the Delaware Oaks in 53 but this has been avoided with the Wilmington race decided on June 26 Also circum ¬ vented is a conflict with the Coaching Club Oaks which is to be decided May 29 The 43 eligibles for the Black Eyed Susan include Fascinator Tessa Fancy Diver Small Favor Jenja Make a Play Cherokee Rose andOAlison in addition to Queen Hopeful who has now raced 21 times never unplaced Fascinator ran beautifully in the Kentucky Oaks and we shall be interested to see more of her though she failed in the Acorn today todayA A A A APimlicos Pimlicos spring meets have the flavor of old home week here in Maryland The rococo clubhouse becomes the vortex of a social whirl with meetings of the Maryland Breeders Association horsemens dinners a yearling show and the informal coziness of breakfast at the Alibi Table It is the time of year for entertaining and for greeting old friends who have returned after long absences at other turf centers over the country Preakness week in Baltimore is somewhat more subdued than riotous Derby week in Louisville and yet it does have the same atmo ¬ sphere of expectancy that something pretty exciting is about to happen There has been a steady increase in public response to Pimlico these last several years and general manager John D Jackson who has something like a genius for such things has rearranged the facili ¬ ties in the tote lines beneath the stands and in the clubhouse so that now the crowds are more comfortable There is more of what track managements term walk around room And the value of this was illumined last Preakness Day when virtually no money was shut out in the tote despite the crush of patrons to see Native Dance meet Dark Star Herman and Ben Cohen and Lou
