Keeneland When Determine flashed past the finish line in front in the 80th Kentucky Derby he ecame the fourth Keeneland sales yearling to cop the Roses In addition the runnerup Hasty Road was sold at Keeneland as were the fourth horse Goyamo arid the fifth finisher Admiral Porter With another Keeneland youngster Imbros winning the 100000 William P Kyne Handicap at Bay Meadows the same afternoon it added up to a great day for the Breeders Sales Company During the long history of the Churchill Downs classic only 18 renewals have been won by racers sold either privately or at auction as yearlings The fact that four of these were sold during the last 11 years at Keeneland speaks well for the quality of the offerings at the annual July vendues Actually Hoop Jr the 1945 Derby winner wasnt sold by the Breeders Sales Company although he went through the Keeneland ring He was offered in 1943 the year before the local cooperative group was established Jet Pilot winner in 1947 was sold for 41000 by the B S C Dark Star for 6500 and Determine for 12000 A A w Among the entrants for the 1954 auction is a halfbrother of Determine a gray colt by Revoked Koubis consigned by Dr Eslie Asbury Also entered is a halfsister of Imbros winner of the 100000 West Coast Special May 1 Owned by Woodvale Farm she is a brown filly by Haltal Fire Falls and besides being a halfsister of Imbros is a full sister of the stakeswinning Haltafire Alto ¬ gether some 700 yearlings have been entered for the forthcoming auctions But this list will be reduced nearly in half with only about 400 appearing in the catalogue The sale is to be confined to three days beginning July 26 To be included in the catalogue the yearlings must pass two screenings First by a pedigree committee second by an inspection committee The pedigree com ¬ mittee wound up its work last week and the inspectors will get into action towards the end of this week The great race mare Busher whose career as a broodmare got off to a slow start came up with her first winner last week when her son Jet Action won impressively at Belmont in a prep for the Withers which race he won today Jet Action a son of Jet Pilot is the Maine Chance matrons third foal Neither of her first two offspring got to the races Her first foal Miss Busher by Alibhai is now one of Mrs Elizabeth Grahams broodmare band at Spendthrift and was bred to Jet Pilot this spring Louis B Mayer owns her second foal Popularity also a daughter of Alibhai She produced a filly by Bernborough this year and has been bred back to Royal Charger Bushers fourth foal is a twoyearold filly by Jet Pilot named Bush Pilot She again has been bred to Jet Pilot this year yearA A A A AThe The victory of Riverina although it was shared with Happy JMtood in the Acorn Stakes puts Jier dam Bee Mac in the exclusive group of broodmares which has produced four stakes winners Bee Mac an outstanding performer herself in the silks of CoL E R Bradley also is the dam of Better Self Prophets Thumb and Mac Bea Another of her sons Black Douglas placed in stakes and set a worlds record Bee Mac is now owned by Robert J Klebergs King Ranch Her two sons Better Self and Prophets Thumb are now at stud at the local annex of the fabulous ranch while another son Beau Max stands in Texas TexasA A A A AThe The success of Andrew J Crevolin at the Keeneland Rummer Sales has been phenomenal Bill Evans general manager of the Breeders Sales Company has com ¬ piled a list of the Alhambra Calif automobile mans purchases since he entered the local market in 1948 That year he paid 49400 for 11 youngsters Among them were two stakes winners Be Fleet winner of 162000 and Valquest Crevolin came back in 1951 and gave 72000 for 10 This group included three stakes winners One was Imbros who has earned nearly 200000 another Decorated winner of more than 100000 The other was the filly Schatzi Despite this remarkable success Crevolin topped it with his 1952 purchases when he bought five for 32800 Three of them have become stakes winners the Derby winner Determine Allied and War Tryst A little surprising however is that in each of the Californians forays into the local market his toppriced yearling turned out to be the best racer In 1948 it was Be Fleet who cost 13500 His only other fivefigure buy that year was Valquest for whom he paid 10100 Imbros at 15100 topped his 1951 buys while in 1952 he reached five figures only once when he gave 12000 for Determine DetermineA A A A Henry Knight who has foaling operations on three major fronts at Alma Almahurst hurst Coldstream and at Laguna Seca in California wound up the season at Almahurst last week Six mares remain to foal at Coldstream The last foal at the Nicholasville nursery was a chestnut colt by Rippey Spring Quest which is owned by Clifford Lussky of Louisville Another of the final arrivals of 1954 is a full brother of the stakes winner Nirgal Lad LadA A A A AScientific Scientific knowledge of the thoroughbred horse based on sound modern principles is thoroughly inadequate Many projects have been undertaken in recent years to remedy the situation One which may in time furnish some valuable information on thoroughbred blood analysis is the studies being made at Crown Crest laboratory which was set up and made available to the community not long ago by Howard Reineman Another important addition is the horse hospital now being established by Crown Crest In time some valuable surgical techniques may be developed since facilities will be available which will enable the veterinarians to work with cases
