R B BOB ODOM R B Bob Odom Dies Following Brief Illness IllnessNoted Noted as Trainer and Developer Of Handicap Star Crafty Admiral AdmiralBELMONT BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y May 8 R B Bob Odom died at his home in Garden City L I early today following a brief illness Odom who was born in 1891 was associated with racing the better part of his life lifeThe The remains are at the Crinks Funeral Home at Garden City Private funeral services will be held on Monday MondaySurviving Surviving are his wife Mrs Estrella Perez Odom and two daughters Mrs Mar jorie Brickell and Mrs Evelyn Trippe TrippeBob Bob was the uncle of G P Maje Odom and a brother of George M Odom both noted trainers He had been active in Florida during the winter but shortly after he returneid to New York complained of pains which baffled his doctors who could not learn the nature of his ailment The news of his death was a severe shock to his many friends in the turf world worldThe The ninth of 10 children Bob Odom was born at Columbus Ga and came to the races under the aegis of his father who owned and trained horses on the New York and New Orleans tracks The younger Odom was for several years a clubhouse bookmaker on the New York tracks Al ¬ though he had won his share of races for many years Odom first came into national prominence through the successes of the South American Beauchef winner of the Massachusetts Handicap and Merchants and Citizens Handicap among other races in 1948 1948Odom Odom will be best remembered profes ¬ sionally for his development of Crafty Ad ¬ miral whom he trained for the Charfran Stable of Charles and Frances Cohen Starting in Florida in the winter of 1952 with thjsson of Fighting Fox who had not raced as a threeyearold Odom brought him along to win the Palm Beach Gulf stream Park Brooklyn Merchants and Citizens Whirlaway and Washington Park handicaps and finish second in the Tobog ¬ gan Thomas J Healey Suburban and Car ¬ ter handicaps eventually being voted the Handicap Champion of the Year This is generally regarded as one of the outstand ¬ ing training feats of recent years as Crafty Admiral had never been remarkably sound which was the reason for his being side ¬ lined during his sophomore campaign campaignOdom Odom was the only trainer the Cohens have had since they came into racing with the acquisition of Crafty Admiral and it was a pleasant and profitable relationship relationshipConfnuerf Confnuerf en Page FortyThree R B Bob Odom Dies Following Brief Illness IllnessNoted Noted as Trainer and Developer Of Handicap Star Crafty Admiral AdmiralContinued Continued from Page Three Threeon on both sides While the veteran was active last winter converting Brown Booter into a highly successful grass campaigner he had been ill for several weeks before his death Odoms training record follows 1946 11 78585 1947 17 81030 1948 11 106615 1949 0 700 1950 i 4 13250 1951 3 10212 1952 w 22 3f6675 1953 v 13 243850 1954 4 16400 Totals 85 867317
