Skipper Bill Holds Off Royal Battle For Nose Victory in Camden Sprint Burr Has Darby Dan Horse Well Placed All the Way WayMiss Miss Arlette Earns Third By WILLIAM C PHILLIPS PHILLIPSGARDEN GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J April 30 Darby Dan Farms Skipper Bill winner of the Princeton Handicap at this course last fall was a narrow winner this sunny afternoon of the featured Interna ¬ tional Purse With Charlie Burr in the irons the light chestnut Son of Errard de ¬ terminedly resisted challenges from W E Browns Royal Battle through the final threesixteenths and outfinished that rival by a steady nose noseRoyal Royal Battle appeared capable of wrest ¬ ing command making his bid b u t h e hung He was second by a length over Calu ¬ met Garms Miss Arlette whom Willie Har tack had to briefly steady on tlie final turn while Mrs Ada B Eklofs Amawalk came on gamely after being forced back in a jam on the stretch turn The second program of the current 25 day meeting attracted a gathering of 19058 which was a little less than the post opening program last year that was held on a Tuesday The weather was delightfully springlike Springlike won the sixth race and paid 4020 and the track was fast although it apparently had a deeper cush ¬ ion than on opening day Skipper Bill ran the six furlongs under a steadying 124 pounds in 111 111Skipper Skipper Bill was fayored over his nine rivals in the International and he paid 540 and the only other winning favorite through the feature was in the first race raceMrs Mrs Tom J Barrys Combat Fleet quali ¬ fied nicely for the 25000 added Delaware Valley Stakes coming up this Saturda when he won todays sixfurlong Fairview Purse The sophomore son of Combat and Shy Belle she by Hyperion drew away with authority from Ada L Rices Royal Product when Sammy Boulmetis soundly roused him in the last furlong and he won by two lengths lengthsRoyal Royal Product dueled with the winner from the beginning and he remained sec ¬ ond by five lengths over Calumet Farms Captain Morgan The favorite was Ridge Stables But First who was making his debut of the season He showed brief speed and finished a tiring fourth fourthCombat Combat Fleet had not been too impres ¬ sive in two starts this spring at Jamaica and he returned 1400 His time of 111 was veiy good considering the condition of the track and he was defeating three other nominees for the Delaware Valley The winner started but two times as a juvenile and he was an easy winner in his second start startBurr Burr enjoyed his second success of the day when he won with Skipper Bill The lanky veteran had the sixyearold horse up close to the pace racing on the outside of Paddys Day Gable Jack Amawalk and Royal Battle The order did not materially change until the final turn when Skipper Bill increased his speed to take a clear lead and drop over near the rail at the head of the stretch Royal Battle moved between rivals to lodge his bid and it was a nip and tuck battle through the home lane The first two horses who have been bitter i rivals in New Jersey for the past two sea ¬ sons both shouldered 124 pounds Skipper Bill started five times in Florida last win ¬ ter and finished second in his last two outings Royal Battle a fiveyearold son of Time Passes had started twice unsuc ¬ cessfully at Jamaica
