Record OpeningNight Crowd at Fairmount 12375 Wager 348533 on Nine Races Inaugural to King Bebe BebeBy By J J IIAHN IIAHNFAIRMOUNT FAIRMOUNT PARK Collinsville 111 April 30 Racing returned to southern Illi ¬ nois Saturday night with the opening of the 60program meeting of the Fairmount Park Jockey Club and despite threatening weather which eventually turned into a cloudburst between the eighth and ninth races a record night attendance was set when 12375 fans from this area turned out The Inaugural Handicap a sixfurlong dash was won by H H Rendlemans King Bebe an IllinoisTared son of Prince Sador Bebeja who probably scored a lucky victory under a smart ride by the veteran L J Colclasure who was scoring his second suc ¬ cess on the program having won the third race on Lady La Rue Mr and Mrs G B Holmans All Tilly coupled with Black Bantam was second and Mr and Mrs H P Tripletts Hopeful Sam topweight and a slight public choice over the winnerwas third thirdThe The Saturday night attendance was ap j proximately 3000 more than the 1955 j opening and the wagering which came to a surprising 348533 topped the 270000 handle of the corresponding night the previous year yearWhen When the Mikel Farms Miss Night was a late declaration there were only nine left who went postward in the Inaugural and following home the three top ones were Speed Wrinkle Ziggity WalODot Black Bantam Drip and Royal Mon MonRay Ray C Bennigsen general manager of the local plant stated there were 3600 au ¬ tomobiles parked in the track lot and ap ¬ proximately 600 more jammed into a space across the highway from the course and in addition many more were forced to park their cars along U S Highway 40 Bennig ¬ sen estimated there were some 700 more cars parked in this area Saturday than last Memorial Day when a record number of cars were lined up as much as a mile from the entrance entranceMud Mud horses are expected to have their inning here Tuesday night when the sport is resumed Nine races are carded and the top number on the card is the Belleville Purse a sixfurlong dash in which seven threeyearolds are expected to go post ward The track was left sloppy this morn ¬ ing from the Saturday night cloudburst and prospects are that more rain will fall in this area before tomorrows program is run xNamed for the feature the only non claiming race on the card are Solero Jr Marcy Day Shade St Law Shifter Captain Buster Tex Lerno and On Again A major ¬ ity of the prospective starters are well known to local fans The newcomers are Law Shifter Captain Buster and On Again
