EVERETT G HAYNES Hold Everett C Haynes Funeral in California CaliforniaFamed Famed Jockey of World War 1 Rode Epinard in American Races RacesLOS LOS ANGELES Calif April 30 Funer ¬ al services will be held tomorrow for Ev erett C Haynes the famed rider of the World War I and Roaring Twenties eras who was renowned as Epinards jockey Haynes who won stakes in this country and Europe died here Saturday after a long illness He was 61 years old Rites will be conducted at 3 pm at the Hardin and Flanagan Mortuary 635 So Prairie Ave Inglewood InglewoodHaynes Haynes rode Epinard to classic victories in France and England for Pierre Wert heimer and the arrival of the horse in the United States in 1924 was one of the most heralded events of the decade A special international series of races was scheduled for the colt against topflight American horses at Belmont Park Aqueduct and La tonia but Epinard was defeated in all three by Wise Counsellor Ladkin and Sar azen azenOddly Oddly it was also in defeat that Haynes acquired another great measure of his fame The jockey rode Omar Khayyam when the 1917 Kentucky Derby winner lost a narrow decision to Hourless in their great match race at Laurel in the fall of that year Paradoxically Haynes was under contract to Major August Belmont the owner of Hourless the year before and piloted the colt to several stakes victories as a twoyearold Haynes later went to Europe where he enjoyed great success as a rider in France and Germany He turned to breeding tho ¬ roughbreds in Germany and was one of the most successful in the history of the coun ¬ try so successful in fact that the Nazi NaziContinued Continued on Page FortyFour Hold EverettC Haynes Funeral in California CaliforniaFamed Famed Jockey of World War I Rode Epinard in American Races Continued from Page Three Threeregime regime in the early 30s issued special orders to curtail his activities and Haynes left the country to return to the United States StatesHaynes Haynes was born in Elizabethtown Ky on March 27 1895 While still in his teens he rode in quarter horse races in Texas and Oklahoma Haynes became contract rider for G L Blackford of Denison Texas in 1910 and was the leading rider in the West in 1912 1913 and 1914 In 1915 he headed East and North and rode with so much success in Canada that year that the following season in 1916 Major Belmont engaged him himRiding Riding the horses of the chairman of The Jockey Club Haynes acquired a na ¬ tional reputation on such horses as Friar Rock and Hourless Friar Rock was best threeyearold of the year winning the Belmont Stakes Suburban and Brooklyn Handicaps among other stakes The Frenchbred Hourless was ridden to vic ¬ tory by Haynes in the Juvenile Grand Union Hotel Eastern Shore and Annapolis Stakes In 1917 Haynes left Major Belmonts employ and scored with E R Bradlgys Kalitan in the Preakness He entered the Army when this country went to war and was given a special furlough to ride Omar Khayyam against Hourless After the war Haynes rode freelance and pilated Exter ¬ minator to several triumphs later joining the stable of W H Rowe for whom he won a number of good races with Oil Man In 1922 he went to France and signed a con ¬ tract to ride for Weltheimer handling the French champion Epinard in all his races but one oneHe He later rode in England Austria arid Germany and when weight forced him from the saddle he became a trainer As a rider in Germany he won more than 800 races and scored in the German Derby three times When he began breeding horses in Germany there was a rule in effect that the breeder of every winner of a race receives 10 per cent of the purse The produce of Haynes breeding opera ¬ tions were so successful that the Nazis is ¬ sued a special order barring any foreigner from receiving the 10 per cent breeders award awardHe He returned to the United States and settled in Oklahoma City where he entered a new line of business as the distributor of a soft drink retiring several years ago agoSurviving Surviving are his wife Edna a son Capt William E Haynes of the Air Force and three sisters
