Lareer Boy Definite Starter Veitch Says SaysBlows Blows Out Over Slow Drying Strip Hartackto Ride Fabius With Baird Up on PintorLea PintorLeaBy By OSCAR OTIS OTISCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 4 Career Boy will start in the eighty second running of the Kentucky Derby come what may in the matter of weather or track conditions trainer Sylvester Veitch announced this morning after the horse had blown out over a good and slowly dry ¬ ing out racing strip stripAnd And late this morning trainer Jimmy Jones named Bill Hartack on Fabius with Bobby Baird to ride Pintor Lea which would seem to suggest that the astute Cal ¬ umet conditioner considers the sleek son of Citation and Shameen the most fit of his two Derby candidates candidatesThese These were the big items of interest this morning on the backstretch as Derby con ¬ tenders for the most part marked time awaiting their rich and gloryladen engage ¬ ment late Saturday afternoon Needles the favorite was on the track for a gallop and managed it okay although he did stop after going a short distance upon arriving at the turn pulling himself up and surveyed the scenery but after a spell he thought better of it and continued the gallop without incident He came back to the barn kicking and full of life lifeReaping Reaping Right Officially Scratched ScratchedRacing Racing secretary Al Lavin revealed that an official scratch had been filed in his office for Reaping Right but no action will be taken on this until 600 oclock tonight official scratch time timeCareer Career Boy looked good in his blowout and the decision to start him means that he is regarded as fit and ready for his best effort despite the injury which almost took him out of the race last week end an in ¬ jury which has healed in remarkably fast time Career Boy went three furlongs in 37 with a furlong in 12 one quarter in 24 24Career Career Boys stablemate Head Man also was on the track this morning for a gallop broke into a less than brisk move through the stretch and was timed threesixteenths in 19 breezing breezingHartack Hartack was in the irons when Fabius wearing four bandages was given his blow ¬ out this morning going three furlongs in 37 and up a half in 50 Fabius never looked better Pintor Lea galloped Terrang wearing blinkers was on the track late and went a half in 50 with fractions of a furlong in 12 a quarter in 25 and three furlongs in 37 37Colin Colin MacLeods Besomer with blinkers on and Nick Shuk in the quarter deck went a smart half in 47 for admittedly the smartest move of the morning He was just tiptoeing as he sped the first furlong in 12 the quarter in 23 and three fur ¬ longs in 34 34Brandywine Brandywine Stables big Countermand with Arnold Kirkland upand also wearing four bandages managed a half in 51 breezing with fractions of a furlong in 13 a quarter in 26 and three furlongs in 38 He looked good goodOn On the track for nothing more than gallops were Ben A Jones Come On Red and High King
