New Jersey By Fred Go am Chance it Tony Draws Bead on Preakness Manzi Sees Improvement Over Derby Effort May Meet Tim Tarn Again in Jersey Stakes StakesGARDEN GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 6 The weather continued raw and rainy this morning which made it doubly unpleasant on trainer Bill Manzi as he went from the barn to the stable gate periodically awaiting the arrival of Mrs Anna Canullis Chance it Tony from Churchill Downs The colt was New Jerseys lone representative in the famed Kentucky Derby and though he didnt get a part of the purse he was far from humiliated when he finished a good sixth Chance it Tony was not given much of a chance by the crowd as he went off at 245tol but he had behind him such wellplayed horses as Silky Sullivan and Gone Fishin He was making the trip back to his Jersey base but the van must have encountered bad veather and was late in arriving arrivingWhile While biding his time Manzi discussed the immedi ¬ ate future for the Cannuli colt The Preakness a week from Saturday is next lor Chance it Tony Manzi feels his colt should have been on the board at Churchill Downs He should have been fourth he remarked this morning He made his move just before the half mile pole and was going good when he got stopped cold He must have run into a wall of horses If it werent for that Im sure he would have been fourth The set ¬ back in the Derby has only encouraged Manzi and owner Cannulli to try again at Pimlico in the second leg of the Triple Crown Bill feels that Chance it Tony may not have been tight enough for the Derby but expresses confidence that he will be next week weekIsinglass Isinglass Blinkers Protect Colts Eyes EyesI I hope tlie track is fast for the Preakness re ¬ marked Bill He can run on any kind of strip but better oh a fast track I had some specially made isin ¬ glass blinkers which cover his whole eye Last year he was hit a couple of times with sand so much that his eyes would be running for a couple of days Then I had those blinkers made I couldnt use them in the Derby because of the mud They wouldnt have done any good as they would have been covered completely with slop slopChance Chance it Tony has yet to win a stake but has been close in a couple He was second in the Worlds Play ¬ ground and fourth in the Garden State last year Hes a bridesmaid but never a groom said Willie mixing his metaphors Present plans call for Chance it Tony to be shipped to Pimlico next Sunday then get a work and a blowout over the strip and go in the famed Maryland classic Chance it Tony wont start in a prep race but th n Manzi feels that most of tiie other Preakness starters will also go into the race without benefit of a warmup race so there shouldnt be any edge in that department If Chance itjtony improves just a mite he should be able to get on the board which Manzi felt the horse should have done in the Derby and is almost sure he will in the Preakness PreaknessWhile While Chance it Tony is going to Maryland for another shot at Tim Tarn the Derby winner if present plans of Calumet Farm jell he can also be expected to try him again in the 50000 Jersey Stakes here Jim ¬ my Jones on a commuting schedule between here and Pimlico inspected the local stock this morning and was satisfied with their training schedule Tim Tarn wjll be joining the division here after the Preakness and a definite decision on whether New Jersey fans will see the Derby winner here will be made after the Maryland race Tim Tarn incidentally made the first start of his career over the strip The handicap star
