predicted several days ago the cough is taking its toll especially in two yearold events around these parts The Youthful Stakes at Jamaica for tomorrow has four starters and these were obtained by dint of perseverance For a few minutes it seemed that that the Youthful would be a twohorse race or a walkover However the Graham Bell inven ¬ tion came to the rescue and ac ¬ quired two more entrants Some of the more pessimistic of the paddock gang memberships were of the belief that the race would would be called off or abandoned for lack of entries but their fears went for naught naughtThe The abandonment or cancellation of a stake event is nothing new in racing Several years ago trainer Preston Burch he had the Longchamps Farm horses in his care shipped a twoyearold filly to Suffolk Downs to race The miss Donita M arrived on the scene in the summer of 1938 However at that time they had a clause in the stage engagements in fine type that in the opinion of the management the race could be declared off at will This was just what happened The Suffolk Downs management declared that no other starters could be mustered against the invader from New York Donita M got a sightseeing tour of New England from Belmont Park to Boston and back At that time there was ho toll roads and traffic was extremely heavy at times timesWolkovers Wolkovers a Thing of the Past Stakes events have changed over the years and the oldtime walkover is now memories On the subject of walkovers some of the veterans recall that the late Kim Patterson spent an hour one morning with his jockey planning strategy
