Homestead was outrun early, but turned Into the stretch on the extreme outside and joined the favorite when a furlong out, just getting home in the last stride after a desperate struggle. Cinquevalli was certainly the best at the distance. Getting away flatfooted and in close quarters, he rushed up on the Inside and shook off Locket in the first quarter and could have come away at the time, but Bullman was content to take only a slight lead to the stretch, allowing the winner to get up to and outgame his mount in th.e final drive. Lord Badge closed up fast in the last quarter and got up in the last stride to beat Candling. The latter had a fighting chance when a sixteenth out and ran a surprisingly good race. Locket quit after going a fast half and is strictly a mudlark. Tantalus Cup looked big and lacked condition, yet ran a good race for the first time out in a year. Scratched— 39960Interval, 122. Won handily; second drivings-Tip Gallant went wide on all the turns and nearly fell at the Liverpool while going the second time around, but otherwise decisively xmtjumped his field and, after trailing early raced into a long and winning lead at the end of two miles, gamely stalling off Land of Clovers strong challenge in the stretch. The latter was skilfully and patiently ridden and stamped himself a good cross-country horse and appeared to be wearing the winner down at the end. He should develop into one of the best of the year. Carrier Pigeon lost so much ground at the obstacles as to eliminate him as a contender early in the game. Self Protection went well for half the * journey. The Virginian was a strong contender at the end and was moving up when he fell at the second from the last jump. Pulsus held a good position next to the rail right in behind the pacemaker and darted through on the inside as they straightened for home in the stretch and came away fast right at the end, was surely the best today and track conditions favored him against the favorite. Broomstick forced the pace nearly throughout and ran a grand race at the weights. He tired slightly in the final furlong and may not have bee"a quite keyed up and in addition found the going against him. Conjurer, evidently another crackerjack, finished a fast running third. Alliance came out of the ruck in the last furlong and although poorly handled finished like a cyclone on his own courage. Stalwart ran lapped on Broomstick for the first five furlongs and was tiring at the end, yet he stuck to his work gamely. Magistrate raced on the extreme outside in the first flight to the turn where he was bearing out, losing ground, and was unable to improve his position. He has bad feet which probably stopped him in the dry going. Boxwood, which trailed for half the journey, was making up ground at the end. Aristocracy was on nearly even terms on the turn into the stretch. Scratched-39170 Rapid Water, 122; 397922Dimple, 114. Corrected weights— Aristocracy, 122. Pulsus, show, 4 to 5. Winner — B. c, by Star Ruby — Afric Queen trained by R. Miller. Went to post at 4:05. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won driving; second the same. Africander, hard held, ran lapped on Major Dalngerfield to the far turn, where he ran into the lead still under a choking pull. When finally straightened for home he was sent along to stall off the favorites strong challenge and, coming on fast and gamely, won going away at the end. Irish Lad appeared big and was very unruly in the first half, pulling Burns almost out of the saddle in his effort to place him and went unnecessarily wide throughout, but probably benefited in having the winner make the pace and was undoubtedly beaten today on his merits. Bonnibert ran a remarkable race at the weights and, when beginning the final quarter, moved up with such a rush that for a moment it looked as if he would overhaul the two three-year-olds. Right at the end, however, he tired. His Eminence moved up fast when rounding the far turn. Major Daingerfield was at a gr«tf. disadvantage in having to force the pace early, which was comparatively slow, and whea the trailers, all of which had been pulling hard, were called on they ran past him as if he was anchored. His race was a bad one and mud may be his forte strictly. Igniter kept well up for the first mile, but on sufferance only. Scratched— 39867 Circus, 126. Africander, show, 1 to 3. Semitic, a fine, long-striding filly, from a lucky start and skillfully ridden, came through at the end with a brilliant rush and won going away fast. Inquisitive Girl made the running until well into the stretch, where she was passed by the winner, but held on unexpectedly-well and her showing was extra good under a poor rider. Julia M., with too much early pace to contend at the end, held on gamely in the final drive. The Lady Rohesia closed up very fast at the end. Monet got away poorly and was compelled to run on the outside of the big field, came from a long way back at the end and finished fast. Mohave finished close up.
