TO PROVIDE PAID STEWARDS BY LAW. Criticism of the Jockey Club for rigidly adhering to Its "no scandal"- policy and refusing to publicly investigate some of the alleged form reversals and bad rides of late has created a demand in certain quarters for professional paid stewards. A bill was introduced at the last session of the legislature providing for the appointment of paid stewards by the State Racing Commission to serve on all tile New York tracks and that the commission exercise, a general supervision over the sport aside from, its merely perfunctory duty of granting licenses, but the measure was never reported out of committee.. It Is said, however, that a similar measure will be introduced at Albany during the next meeting of the legislature and a strong effort made to hayo It passed.
