NAMES WITH A WAR-TIME TINGE. Toronto, Out., December 4. There is a wartime tinge to the nomenclature of the voting stock 111 the breeding establishment of George M. Hen-drie, and the future race horses bear names that are suggestive of the present great European struggle. The yearlings are as follows, the sire Charles Edward being home-bred, and the other five purchased in the United States: Ammunition, ch. c, by Charles Edward Shimon-ese. Springside, ch. c, by Charles Edward Spring-wells. Prize Court, b. c, by Charles Edward Plaeena. North Sea, b. c, by Sweep Orange and Blue. Jutland, b. c, by Hessian Lizzie Montrose. Sweet Alyssum, b. f, by Ballot Sweet Lavender. Saiuza, b. f, by Sain La Venganza. Storm Bound, b. f, by Marta Santa Sea Spray. For a still later season there are five home-bred yearlings at the Valley Farm, bred as follows: Border Chief, b. c, by Charles Edward Ambrosine. Salvo, b. c, by Charles Edward Shoo Fly. Slogan, ch. c, by Charles Edward Anthem. Ordnance, ch. f, by Charles Edward Otsiketa. Somme, ch. f, by Charles Edward Spanish Maid. North Sea is a half-brother to Hendrie, a good winner for J. E. Madden this year, and Sweet Alyssum is a half-sister to Mr. Hendries fine horse, Rancher. The Sain filly is a half-sister to Manager Waite, and Storm Bounds dam. Sea Spray, is a sister to Ocean Bound. Charles Edward, the sire of eight of these youngsters, was a remarkable race horse when at his best, a winner of 1,448 in two seasons on the turf, a horse of superb speed, a stayer and able to carry high weights with ease. In 1907, while racing at Brighton Beach, he gave an exhibition of speed seldom witnessed anywhere, when lie won three successive races, running a mile in 1:37, a mile and an eighth in 1:50 and a mile and a half in 2:30, carrying big weight and winning in a canter in each case, Charles Edward met and defeated such cracks as Ballot, Dr. Gardner, Electioneer, Nealon, Dinna Ken and Frank Gill, glory enough for any horse. Probably among these young Charles Edwards, another of the speed and weight-carrying ability of its sire will be found. At least Mr. Hendrie would not be disappointed if such proves the case.
