SARATOGAS GRAND RACING. THREE VALUABLE STAKE RACES SERVE TO ATTRACT A GREAT ATTENDANCE. Sun Briar an Easy Victor in the Rich Saratoga Special "Weldship "Wins the North American Steeplechase for Third Successive Year. By .T. L. Dempsey. Saratoga, X. Y., August 11. Todays racing offering by the Saratoga Racing Association scintillated with features and attracted an attendance that by far exceeded any former assemblage of this meeting. Ideal weather contributed towards enjoyment of the good racing. The Saratoga Special, for two-year-olds, was easily the chief feature of the afternoon and brought out the best of eastern-owned juveniles. The race is a snorting event strictly, the only offering that the association contributes to the event is a gold plate of ,000 value, but in addition to this the winner captured 0,7."0 as his net portion, the amount of the jackpot by owners having made nominations to the race and having starters in it. W. S. Kilmers good colt Sun liriar. triumphed in it over II. P. AVhitneys Itosie OGrady, with Papp following. There were nine starters to accept, with A.- K. Maeombers Tracksend favorite and Sun Briar, Kosie OGrady and Papp also having a host of supporters. Papp was on his unruly behavior at the barrier ana delayed the start for some time. When they were dispatched, Papp was sidewnys and not wholly prepared, resulting in his getting a bit the worst of the send-off. The Whitney filly was quickest to get into motion and she raced into a long lead, with Tracksend and Sun Briar her closest pursuers. Papp, displaying a high order of speed, managed to move into a contending position, but getting shut off, lost him some ground just before reaching the lower turn. Itosie OGrady continued to show the way until well into the stretch, were Sun Hriar overhauled her and Papp managed to recover in time to outstay the others for third place. Drastic ran a good race in closing an immense gap. The time of the race was slow, considering the supposed speed of the young-stfcrs. The result of the event only served to befuddle further lib claims to championship for the youngsters in these parts and an old-timer probably expressed the situation correctly by the remark, "they are all an ordinary band and will beat each other." The Saratoga Special, a highly coveted stake on the Saratoga program and all its winners have been without exception the best of their year. Its interesting history is here shown: Year. Winner. Wt. Welds splendid fencer Weldship for the third time triumphed in the North American Steeplechase, which lie won in quite easy fashion from Bet, with Sun King, the only other one to finish. The race was a spectacular and enjoyable one until next to the last hedge, where there came a bad mix-np due to the closeness of the field when they took off to leap the obstacle. Tetan was the first to blunder and unseated Powers. Pobeto, with Klenck up, followed suit and Sim King suffered considerably from interference by the downed pair. This left Weldship and Bet to race off by themselves and they had the finish between them, Weldshir ultimately miming hard held. Jockey Klenck was badly shaken up by his fall and sustained a bad cut on his head. The North American Steeplechase is a popular feature of cross-country racing and todays was its thirteenth running. The Champlain Handicap, at a mile and an eighth, was contested by a good field, with James Hutlers Spur favorite and the recently acquired Hendrie, running in the interest of Frank Weir, next in favor, and the English-bred Clematis II., also coming in for good support. Restraining tactics was employed by all the jockeys, resulting in Daddys Choice being forced to make the pace, followed by Clematis II. and Spur. This order was maintained until well along into the stretch, where the English filly took the lead, hotly pursued by Spur, but the latter could not down her and she won with speed in reserve, Spur beating Daddys Choice easily for second place. This race had a net value of ,325. The Champlain Handicap dates back to 1901 and its history briefly summarized is as follows: Year. Winner. A.Wt. Jockey. Val.
