NEW MEXICO GAME SAVING Work of State and Federal Game Protectors During the Past Tear During the recent summer twelve hunters paid by the State of New Mexico and fifteen in the employ of the federal government have conducted an intensive trapping campaign This force has been increased to forty during the fall and winter trapping season as at those seasons the animals are more easily cantured while the value of their fur gives an income to the state which almost pays for killingIllustrative the cost of killing Illustrative of the great value of predatory ani ¬ mal control during the three years of the govern ¬ ments organization work in New Mexico the gray wolf population has been reduced from 300 indi ¬ viduals to fewer than forty The entire extermina ¬ tion of such prowlers will mean great rduction ia the stockBears local losses of live stock Bears also have been destructive in the Pecos Mountain region During the recent grazing season they killed approximately 123 head of valuable cattle Similar damage in the Black Kange and in the Mogollon Mountains makes it evident that a total of at least 250 head of cattle as well as u large number of sheep were killed by bears bearsThese These facts are worthy of consideration the fed ¬ eral specialists point out in view of the general and concerted efforts now under way on the part of sportsmen to enact legislation that will prevent trapping of bears or hunting them with the aid of dogs
