Here and There on the Turf Toro Nancy Starts Vacation Probably Not Best in Futurity Bob Smith T ishes for Mud Bazaar Points for Test Stakes With no engagements at Saratoga and probably not any at Belmont Park the two tracks in a position to greatly enlarge her earnings Toro Nancy is heading back to California and a life of ease for several months With her are going Riskulus Gal ¬ lant Sir and her other companions in the stable maintained by Norman Church wealthy California sportsman Toro Nancy may be back among the entries however shortly after the turn of the year as the en ¬ tire Church stable will be prepared by E L I Woody Fitzgerald for a campaign at the new Santa Anita track which is scheduled to open Christmas day dayToro Toro Nancy proved a surprise winner of the third Arlington Futurity Saturday when she defeated such worthy juvenile colts and fillies as SL Bernard Special Agent Today Preeminent Prince Splendor Albuquerque and Nellie Flag and in doing so upheld Churchs good fortune in Arlington racing The previous Saturday the western sports ¬ mans Riskulus accounted for the Arlington Handicap so victories in the two stakes gave him winnings of more than 50000 at the meeting Riskulus principal objective now is the 100000 Santa Anita Handicap a race in which he must have a good chance if not burdened with too much weight It will be remembered that he was only narrowly beaten by Gallant Sir in the last Agua Cali ente Handicap while being easily handled at the finish and this was reckoned as a smart performance for a colt hardly more than three years old oldLittle Little can be taken from Toro Nancys triumph in the Arlington Futurity She had speed and courage although tiring at the finish and although the time of 112 for the six furlongs may seem slow the course had been cut fairly deep following showers early in the week and a strong breeze re ¬ tarded the runners on the back stretch and turn However the daughter of Toro and Viva America may never see the day again when she can defeat St Bernard Special Agent and Today individually or collectively St Bernard suffered some slight trouble getting through along the rail while Special Agent was shuffled back in the early stages and lost ground on the turn turnSome Some observers believe the Brookmeade Stable colt the best horse in the race and that he would have made good under an ¬ other rider than Mack Garner The veteran ockey had been ill for two days previously iccause of a physic taken to bring about a reduction of two pounds in his weight for an engagement Thursday worked the wrong way He could not have been in top form for the Futurity Trainer Robert A Smith added blinkers to Special Agents equipment for the race and the colt displayed vast improvement in his racing in the Futurity finishing strongest of all while being beaten only half a length As for Today he swerved badly to the inside when Workman stung him with the whip while midway in the stretch stretchFor For tbVpast month or so Bob Smith has been scanning the skies every day before a handicap was to be run to see if it would rain He has one of the smartest mudders in the country under his wing in Inlander and has been very anxious for a slow track to prevail so that the fouryearold son of Infinite and Geisha Girl would have a chance to earn his oats But no rain fell and while Inlander usually started in these handicaps he could not shake loose his ac ¬ quaintance with the eighth pole poleMuddy Muddy going is prevailing at Saratoga these days and should that condition con ¬ tinue throughout the week Smith will have his long awaited opportunity to find out if Inlander is as good in the stuff as he was last year when he captured the Classic and Travers in mud Inlander is among the too few candidates for the Saratoga Handi ¬ cap twin feature with the United States Hotel Stakes on the first Saturdays pro ¬ gram at Saratoga and his chances of victory would be very handsome indeed should the trackbe other than fast His principal rival most likely would be C V Whitneys Roustabout which displayed no little fond ¬ ness for the goo Saturday in marching off with the Rockingham Park Handicap final feature of the summer meeting at the Salem course courseA A fast track prevailing for the Saratoga Handicap a horse to be feared is Mrs John Hertz Watch Him which showed a sterling performance in finishing second to Riskulus in the Arlington Handicap beaten a head while gaining on the winner steadily The Saratoga Handicap is at a mile and a quar ¬ ter for which distance Watch Him is well tuned at the moment Other prospects for the race wet or dry are Sun Archer Dark Secret Growler War Glory and Time Clock ClockToday Today will be the only colt that per ¬ formed in the Arlington Futurity appearing in the United States Hotel Stakes if he is sent after that valuable event because the other stars of the western special are not eligible to Saturdays Juvenile attraction at the Spa From out of the running of the Flash Stakes one or more prominent candi ¬ dates for Saturdays race and with a total ol 120 eligibles to the event the United States can be expected to have a large field Maiden events during the first three days of the meeting should qualify several young ¬ sters for the race because many promising twoyearolds have been held under cover until this late stage of the game gameFrom From the manner in which she is work ¬ ing Edward R Bradleys Bazaar will make her first appearance in competition since the Kentucky Derby in the Test Stakes a dash of seven furlongs featuring Fridays Spa program No later than Saturday she went the distance in 134 over a muddy track and another workout should have her ready for her best effort in the Test With this event out of the way the daughter of Tetratema and Silver Hue will point for the Alabama Stakes at one mile and a quarter on Wednesday August 15 Bradley has never won this race but his Barn Swallow came within inches of beating Speed Boat last year afterward going on to take the Ala ¬ bama The major race tracks Arlington Park Empire City and Rockingham Park closed their meetings Saturday and a re ¬ capitulation shows that two of them Empire and Rockingham had plenty successful sea ¬ sons from a financial standpoint Arlington didnt do so well just as Washington Park and Aurora had done before them on the Chicago circuit so without a doubt the racing fans of that community just arent in a position to give the horses their cus tbmajy support this year Rockingham un ¬ questionably will give its stockholders an immense profit while Empire did so wen under the New Deal in New York racing that James Butler Jr may feel ell re ¬ paid for the expense incurred in Improving the popular Yonkers course
