James Dee Nichols Had First Ride on Horse at Three Months MonthsJAMAICA JAMAICA L I N Y May 4 James Dee Nichols who rode Pretty Valley to victory hi Saturdays final race never got on a horse until he was three months old He was wropped iri his cowboy fathers arms and went 20 miles He hails from Silver City New Mexico and has just turned voting age ageNichols Nichols first wore colors at Pleasanton Calif on Al Thomas Blue Radiance She won by a sixteenth of a mile Nichols rode 171 winnerain 1947 At the El Paso rodeo in 1940 he won a saddle from 50 others in the kids class and in 1941 atSalinas Calif he won the kids steer riding con ¬ test testNichols Nichols is free lancing but sho would like to hookup with some big outfit Ahve ridden against the best and beaten the best he insists Jim whose saddle style evokes memories of Buddy Ensbr returned with Pretty Valley to be told by trainer Belmont Evans Son you were so low in the saddle I couldnt see you youId Id have been lower than that if wasnt using one of ufelts and it kept coming up and slapping me Jim replied repliedOver Over the weekend Nichols sized up New York Shore is some town The Penn Station is bigger than my home town townAfter After the sightseeing is over Jim expects to ride at about 110 pounds His father is still a cow puncher his sevenyearold younger brothers are picking cotton and finishing their riding style
