, ! I f GOSSIP OF THE TURF. While at the post in the first race at Morris Park Tuesday Star Chime kicked at Mischevous and landed on the inside of his off hind foot. The injnry was very painful and Mischievous commenced to linq about. Jockey Walsh dis-I mounted, and when Trainer McCormick, who | had in the meantime crossed the infield, exam- ! ined the colt, he discovered that the membrane covering the bone was ruptured. Mischievous was trotted back to the stewards stand, and. after the officials looked the colt over, they permitted his withdrawal. The program book of the Latonia Jockey Club is out. The book contains the conditions of purse and stake events for the spring of 1 J00, besides other valuable information to the horsemen. The Dexter will be run on the opening day, Monday, May 28. On Decoration Day the Turf Congress Handicap will be run. Other stakes i j I will be decided on the following dates: June 2— The Clipsetta Stakes, for two-year-olds ; five furlongs. June 12— The Harold Stakes, for two-year-olds ; five furlongs. June 16— The Latonia Oaks, for three-year-old fillies; one and a quarter miles. June 21— The Hiinyar Stakes, for three-year olds; one mile and an eighth. June 23— The Covington Spring Stakes, for two-year-olds; five and a half furlongs. June 30— The Tobacco Stakes; for three-year-olds and upward ; one mile. Mr. James B. Ferguson has arrived at Lexington " from California; although his health has 1 been bad, he has not fallen off one whit in the • art of wielding the red flag. His starting in 1 California, according to the San Francisco • papers, has been of the gilt-edged variety all I winter, and he returns to his home full of the • satisfaction that his work has been gratifying to horsemen and public alike.— Thoroughbred Record. At a meeting of the stewards of the Jockey Club, held at the race course at Morris Park recently, a license was granted to Patrick Mc-Cue, the jockey who was suspended September 3, 189i , for improper riding. Manager Frank Fowler of the Queen City Jockey Club has so far recovered from his recent sickness as to be able to visit the Newport track and expects to be well by Monday.
