I I . I I i • i TWO GREAT RACKS. This is one of the most interesting weeks of the racing year, for the reason that two very important events are down for decision. These are the running of the Brooklyn Handicap and the Belmont Stakes. Bothol these stakes make j up a large portion of the yearly turf history. The handicap is worth this year, as usual, I 0,000. It will be run on Saturday, the opening | day of the Gravesend meeting. It is sure to at-| ! tract an enormous crowd, and it promises to be a good race. There is a peculiar attractiveness about this race which makes the winning of it more desirable to owners than the mere cash consideration. Many a horseman would give the value of the race -.imply for the honor of owning a Brooklyn handicap winner. So far as it is possible to judge at this time the field on Saturday may be made up as follows : j Starters. Weight. Jockeys. I Imp 12S P. Clay-Jean Beraud 127 X Turner Ethelbert 127 Maher ] Box 118 OConnor | I Approval 114 Odom Kafaello 113 Jenkins I Half Time 108 Mitchell Kriss Kringle 106 j ! The Kentuckiau 106 Clawson j Wait Not 103 Shaw Survivor 100 McCue 1 Knight of the Garter 100 A Hewitt Strathconau 93 Henry ; On paper this seems to be a very open race in spite of the fact that Ethelbert was such a very easy winner of the Metropolitan and would seem to have the race at hi6 mercy on that form. Since the running of the Metropolitan, however, The Kentuckiau has run a mile in 1 :30i, which was a very creditable performance and seems to : indicata that he is by no means out of it. Kriss I Krisgle has also shown the form which made ! the west look upon him as a great horse, and with only 106 pounds to carry he, too, seems a dangerous element. Jean Beraud is going very well in his work, and the fact that Mr. Whitney was willing to match him against Ethelbert after the latter had won the Metropolitan is sufficient to indicate that he is a very good horse at present. Approval, Survivor, Rafaello and others have performed well enough to enable one to say that they at least have a chance. All that is necessary to a successful race is a good track and fine weather. The Brooklyn ! ! j I | ! Jockey Club announces that it has arranged for I unusual transportation facilities, such as special trains from Long Island City, express ; trains on the "L" roads and trolleys. The Belmont is perhaps the most interesting j of all races for three-year-olds, with the excep- t ion of possibly the Lawrence Realization, run ; at the July meeting at Sbeepshead Bay. It i6 a question, however, if the Belmont is not the | more interesting. By the time the Realization is run the status of the three-year-old is pretty well determined. With the Belmont things are different. There i.- more or less uncertainty attendant upon the latter event. The fact that Kil- : inarnock won the Withers does not indicate i that Mr. Whitney s colt is the best of the three- j year-olds by any means. Nor does the defeat of Mr. Featherstones Mesmerist mean that the ! son of Albert will not come up to the expectations of his owner and trainer. Mesmerist has ■ chance to improve over his race in the With- , ers. So have Kilogram. Magnificent. David : Garrick and others who ran in that stake. The fact that the Belmont is three furlongs further j than the Withers lends additional interest. It is unfortunate, however, that Kilmarnock : is not engaged in the Belmont, for another . meeting between the Whitney colt and Mr. Featherstones Mesmerist would certainly have j I drawn a large crowd to the Westchester course. | But Mesmerist may meet John Bodens Mag- j nificent. August Belmonts Brigadier, John E. | I Maddens Gulden, Philip J. Dwyers Withers, 1 Pierre Lorillards David Garrick or Maribert. i Eugene Leighs Ildrim and possibly others. There are enough horses of good class to insure the Belmont being an exceedingly interesting : affair. This will be the thirty-fourth renewal of the stake. It will be run on Thursday, which is the last day of the Westchester meeting. On the same day will be run the Eclipse Stakes, for two-year-olds. This is one of the most valuable fixtures of the meeting. It will be worth in the neighborhood of 2,000.— New York Herald.
