, : j : . j I | j | I 1 i : DOING WW. AT NEWPORT. It seem.- evident that the Cincinnati track -are to share in the prosperity which has attended every race meeting held so far this year The attendance at Newport Monday was th* be t for an opening day in th«» history ©f Hm track. Of this and other features of the open-r - ly. yesterdays Cincinnati Commercial-Tribune says : "Manager Fowler, of the Newport track, war highly pleased with the opening day yesterday especially when he learned that more money was taken in at the gate than on any othe: opening day in the history of the Queen City Jockey Club. What was most gratifying, however, especially to race-goers, was the way the betting ring was conducted. It was a bona fid" open ring, and each one of the sevep bookie-who cut in put up the usual fee of 00 for the privilege of booking. The seven bookmaker-who were in line are men well known on West era race tracks, and the fact that they are her -, will do much towards improving the betting from day to day. Virginia Carroll, W. E. Ap-plegate, Horace Argo. Barney Wolf. Eddie Austin, Harry Huey. Jinimie Duckworth UJand, John Parnell Mclnerny were the regulars whs had their slates up, while Seth Jacobs presided over the destinies of the field book. There wa-| a good play on every race, and most of the bookies Were surprised at the briskness of thn wagering. That there was plenty of money in the ring is a certainty, for one of the book-I makers won ,075 on the first race. The play considering the strangeness of the card, wa-I very good, and it is certain to improve eacfe day. Colonel Applegate voiced the opinion o-; several of the bookies when he said : Thegame here is good, and will be better every day, mark my word. I have never seen so much money o: a Cininuati track in ,-evera! years as 1 did today, and it was Monday, t o. Some good race-will draw out big crowds here, and then th bookies will have to hustle to handle th moiii-y. I think by the time the horses go t Latonia next Monday, there will be ten bookmakers in line here.1 "Secretary Ed Hopper, of Latonia, and Charley Price, the former secretary of theLoaisvill* Jockey Club, circulated in the crowd. Th-latter will be one of the judges at Latonia. Mr. Hopper was pleased with Newports, showing, and said it surprised him and augur- well for * fine meeting. Mr. Hopper says he expects not less than ten bookies to be on at Latonia. ana gave the following reasons for it: "Newport got fir t whack et the snort and the track will do very well this week. By th-time Latonia open.-, next Monday, the playei-will have a line on the horses, and there will be some great betting. The game will be workeo up and, of course. Latonia will benefit by it so that I expect there will be plenty of play fo: the bookmakers. When there is the play you can get the books. We have a good Mfcarfc ani will improve each day. "J. J. McCafferty arrived at Newport yesterday morning with thirteen horses, in the lot being Cleora, who is a candidate for the Latoni Oaks, and Fleuron. Jockey Gilmore aeconrpa ! nied the stable, and will do all its riding. Mr. McCafferty will race here until July aad thei shipEast. "Virginia " Carroll has been transformed into a Chesterfield. Yesterday when a betto: j handed up a dollar to him to wager on Drt-- I gheda. he suavely said : "Two-dollar bet- j please. The field Ixjok takes single dollars." "Jockey Tom Britton had another mishap added to his long record of falls, tumbles ana | accidents. He had the mount on Banbury i* I CONTINCKD ON SECOND PAOE. t i DOING WELL AT NEWPORT. Continued from First Page. the third race, and going down the backstretch the horse had plenty of speed and got jammed in the bunch going around the turn. Britton was compelled to pull up to tret clear, and just when he looked safe the horse stumbled and went down. Britton took a header, but luckily escaped injury beyond a severe shaking up. Banbury also was unhurt, and after running a mile ho was caught. The judges afterward ordered that Banburys entry be refused until further orders. "Starter James Caldwell, who will wield the flag at Latonia, watched the work of Jake Holt-man yesterday, and was much pleased with the latters good showiag. Mr. Holtman certainly did well, and did not have a bad start during the afternoon. Starter Caldwell will more than likely succeed Mr. Holtman at Newport.
