NOTE8 OX THE TURF It is reported from New York that the great four-year-old horse, Prince of Melbourne, bought at the sale of the Beard horses at Brighton Beach in the summer for 0,500, is so lame that there is little hope of his being able to start for the 5,000 Annual Champion Stakes to be run on Saturday. It is thought that the horse has broken down permanently. Another sick horse is the crack three-year-old colt Boehamptont who won eight consecutive races, and was suddenly taken ill after arriving in New York from Saratoga. The colt had a high fever -and was said to be in a prec arious condition. It is now improbable that he will be able to indulge in the engagements arranged for him. Several days ago Secretary E. C. Hopper announced officially that Latonias autumn meeting will begin October 16, and terminate November 16, covering a meeting of nineteen days. He ezpscts horses in plenty and has no doubt that the meeting will be fully up to Latonias past standard. Mesmerist, the well-known race horse, owned by Mr. A. Featherstono, arrived at Lexington Wednesday and was Bent to K9nmore farm, where he will ba placed in the stud. The horse is broken down and will not bs raced again. Two handicaps will be run at Hawthorne Monday, Septembar-16, a steeplechase handicap over the short course and a free handica p at one and one-sixteenth miles. Entries clo Be Friday, Boptembsr 13. Steimer, diod recently at Saratoga from lung fever. The horses balonging to Dr. H. E. Bowell will ba sold at Harlem tomorrow, instead of on Monday, as was inadvertently stated in Daily Baoing Form.
